Trogir itinerary – best things to do in Trogir in 1, 2 & 3 days

Share your love

Trogir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been declared the most beautiful island city in the world by National Geographic. With a historic center almost entirely built from the famous Brac white stone (the same one The White House is made of!), Trogir has affectionately been nicknamed The Stone Beauty.

And beautiful she is! I could hardly put the camera down while exploring this little charming town.

Despite its history, Trogir is far from stagnant. This city offers picturesque streets teeming with life and a bustling waterfront with a great selection of bars and restaurants. Trogir is also perfectly located to serve as a base for exploring the surrounding area, be it on the mainland or the surrounding islands.

Below I’m sharing crafted itineraries and recommendations on the best things to do in Trogir in 1, 2, and 3 days.

These itineraries include unmissable sights like Trogir Old town, some off the beaten path beaches and I also made sure you get plenty of fun into your days. This way you’ll get a feel for the history and culture, but you’ll also be able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and incredible coastline.

Trogir itinerary overview – the best of Trogir, Croatia

I’ve condensed all of the best things to do and see in Trogir into these 1, 2, and 3 day itineraries. The old town of Trogir is tiny and can be explored in just half a day, but part of the appeal of visiting Trogir ar its beautiful surroundings. That’s why the multi day itineraries take you to the incredible beaches and natural sights in the area.

I’ll be giving you plenty of information with links to other relevant articles for each attraction or activity whenever I mention it for the first time. But since these activities repeat for different itineraries I left those as a list and you can refer back up for more info when needed.

Refer to this map of Trogir sights to find the attractions mentioned below.

How many days in Trogir?

Trogir is often done as a day or half-day trip from Split. While you can certainly see the main sights in just one jam-packed afternoon, I’d recommend you spend a night here.

You’ll need at least one full day in Trogir to truly experience the charm of the town at night and get a chance to enjoy the nearby beaches or do a boat tour to the magical Blue Lagoon.

By spending two nights in Trogir you’ll have more beach time or you can use this time to explore more of the surroundings, like Ciovo island or Krka National Park.

Where to stay in Trogir

The historic center of Trogir sits on a tiny island nestled between the mainland and the bigger Ciovo island. Several bridges connect it to both and since Trogir is tiny and almost entirely a pedestrian-only zone, staying within the city walls or just across the bridge will give you a similar experience. Your choice will depend mainly on whether you’re traveling by car or not.

We stayed at Villa Lučica in Trogir and loved it. Vila Lucica is beautiful and comfortable with a fabulous location just across the bridge from the old town of Trogir. There’s parking right in front which we were able to use even after check out and the service is fantastic.

Trogir 3 day itinerary

With three days in Trogir you’ll be able to take it easy, relax and still manage to see and experience the Stone beauty as well as some of the most amazing beaches and national parks in the area.

Day 1 – Trogir Old Town

We’ll start the day by exploring the historic city center, hop to the beach in the afternoon and return to the old town for sunset and dinner.

Trogir’s old town is compact and walkable so the best (and only) way to explore it is on foot. I highly recommend you book this affordable walking tour. It covers all the main sights with a professional guide who will provide in-depth historical and cultural insights.

Climb the Bell Tower of The Cathedral Of St. Lawrence

Climb the Bell Tower of The Cathedral Of St. Lawrence first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds.

With its 47 m (154 ft) St. Lawrence’ Bell Tower is the tallest structure in Trogir. A mix of spiral staircases and metal ladders will lead you to the top viewing platform that offers breathtaking views over the town and surroundings.

Make sure to also check out the cathedral which is a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles. The sculpted entrance, Radovan’s Portal, is considered a masterpiece of Romanesque art in Croatia for its intricate design. Inside the cathedral, you’ll find Renaissance art and valuable religious artifacts.

Coffee at Trg Ivana Pavla II

As it’s common for many Mediterranean towns, the main square is the center of life and home to the most majestic buildings. As you descend from the bell tower grab a coffee at Smokvica Cafe on the square in front of the cathedral.

Surrounded by The Cathedral Of St. Lawrence, Church of St. Sebastian, The Clock Tower, City Loggia, City Hall and Cipiko Palace you’ll be in great company!

Admire the historic buildings on the main square

Across from the Cathedral you’ll find the Church of Sv. Sebastijan which was erected in the mid-15th century as a token of gratitude for saving the city from the plague and it has a gorgeous stone Clock Tower with a cute red domed roof instead of the more traditional bell tower. Attached to St. Sebastian church you’ll find the Loggia which used to serve as the town’s open-air courthouse. The highlight of the loggia is a relief of Justice with scales on the east wall. The 15th-century Cipiko Palace is renowned for its attractive facade with beautiful Venetian Gothic windows.

Discover the atrium at the City Hall

The last noteworthy building on the main square is the Rector’s Palace, which today serves as the City Hall and dates back to the 13th century. It was later partially restored in the late 19th century, giving it a delightful Renaissance facade and charm.

As you enter through the small entrance porch, you’ll be greeted by the sight of a monumental Gothic staircase and a beautifully decorated well-head. This courtyard is sure to transport you back in time and leave you with an appreciation for the rich history and architectural beauty of Trogir.

Meander the cobblestone alleys of Trogir Old Town

Exploring the winding streets of Trogir, finding hidden courtyards and quaint squares, discovering quirky shops or traditional konobas, and taking in the medieval architecture is an absolute highlight of any trip to Trogir. It’s almost like stepping back in time, with parts of the Old Town looking like something out of a medieval fantasy.

As you wander around keep an eye out for the City Gates, the Town Musaum and the many churches and monasteries marked on this map.

City Gates, Monasteries and Museum

The old town center of Tragurium (now Trogir) was surrounded by defensive walls built in the 13th century. Parts of these walls can still be seen today and two city gates have been preserved – The Sea Gate on the southern and the Land Gate on the northern sides of the city.

Next to the Sea Gate you’ll find the Benedictine Monastery of St. Nicholas which houses a remarkable collection of artworks, including the Kairos, an exquisite relief that depicts figures and scenes from Greek mythology.

Just across from the Land Gate you’ll find Trogir Civic Museum. Altho fairly small its permanent collection showcases the history of the city and its surroundings from prehistory to the beginning of the 20th century.

Trogir has also been used as the backdrop for the city of Qarth in the Game of Thrones Series and after crossing the Red Desert Kaleesi has been hosted in the Church & Monastery of St. Dominic. This monastery is bursting with an abundance of sculptures, paintings, and religious relics. One of the monastery’s most striking features is the triumphal arch and an altar made of wood.

Lunch at Wild West

After all this walking and history you must be starving! We’ll keep the western tip of Trogir for later and will cross the bridge onto Ciovo Island to grab lunch. Wild West is a small BBQ place near the marina and serves the most amazing burgers in the area. Let’s fuel up!

Siesta at the beach

While the city itself may not have beaches, you don’t have to travel far to get your beach fix. There are several smaller beaches within walking distance like Gradska, Saldun, and even Marinova Draga.

But if you have a car or don’t mind paying for a cab, make your way to the stunning Labadusa beach where you’ll find paradise on earth in form of a beach club – Laganini. Laganini means taking it slow and easy, and what a suiting name that is for this wonderful beach club.

Sunset views from Kamerlengo Fortress

Kamerlengo’s high walls and towers offer commanding views over the sea and are the perfect spot to watch the sun go down. Kamerlengo Fortress (also known as Kamerlengo Castle) was built in 1437 to house the Venetian army and protect the sea channel and port.

Behind the fortress you’ll find St Mark’s Tower. This defence tower was built by the Republic of Venice in the 15th century to defend against cannon shots during the Turkish invasion.

Between them you’ll find Marmont’s Gloriette, this elegant gazebo was built by the French during the Napoleonic occupation. At the time it jutted out into a marshy lagoon and was completely surrounded by the sea.

Stroll down the Riva & Dinner

Stretching down from Kamerlengo Fortress, the Trogir waterfront is filled with cafes, bars, restaurants, and ice cream shops. You’ll have centuries-old buildings on one side and multi-million dollar boats anchored on the other side.

The Riva is perfect for an evening stroll and people watching. Pick a restaurant along the waterfront or take a turn into one of the alleys and sit down for a delicious seafood dinner.

As the sun sets, a whole new side of Trogir is revealed on this lantern-lit night tour. Deep within the stone walls of Trogir, the echoes of dark and mysterious tales dating back over 2,000 years, still linger.

Day 3 – Ciovo Island or Krka NP

It’s choice day! Are you craving more beach time or would you prefer waterfalls? Today you get to pick between exploring the beautiful coastline of Ciovo Island or chasing waterfalls at Krka National Park.

Krka NP Croatia DSC03428 Edit 2

A) Day trip to Krka National Park

If Plitvice Lakes National Park has all the lakes, then Krka National Park has all the waterfalls, and then some. Krka NP is best known for Skradinski Buk, but the National Park is so much more than this, so make sure you book a tour that allows you to explore the park deeper.

Read next: Your guide to visiting Krka National Park

It is also possible to reach Krka NP by water and the boat ride up the river to the entrance of the park is absolutely gorgeous! If you’re traveling in a group or can afford it, then you should seriously consider this private speedboat tour. You’ll board your boat in Trogir and visit Krka National Park, Šibenik and Primošten for some breathtaking views along the way.

Skradinski Buk is a network of cascades and waterfalls weaving their way over numerous tiers and between ponds, bushes, and mini-islands, ending in a lake-like plunge pool. From Skradinski Buk you can hop on a boat, drive or walk up to the 22.5m high Roski Slap, next to it you can visit the Necklaces which is a network of small cascades, backwaters and islets. From here you can climb up the 500+. steps to Ozidana pecina cave. Another popular highlight of Krka NP is Visovac Island. If you want your jaw to drop, make your way to the remote Vidikovac Rogovo.

B) Explore Ciovo Island

The Island of Trogir is connected to the bigger Ciovo island which is home to some stunning beaches worth exploring, like Labadusa, Slatine and Kava. The island also has several worthwhile viewpoints scattered on the many hills and, you guessed it, a ton of churches too.

You can explore Ciovo island by land or water, but you will need some means of transport. If you’re already traveling by car you’re sorted, otherwise, you’ll have to pick up a vehicle of some sort. The obvious solution would be to rent a car or catch a cab if you only want to visit one or two beaches.

I’d recommend you hire a Quad. A lot of the best beaches on the island can only be accessed by gravel roads so an ATV is the perfect solution for not getting stuck. You can even join this guided quad tour on Ciovo island.

The cheapest and most active way to go around is by renting a mountain bike. Ciovo has several biking tracks that are very pleasant in spring and autumn, but I would not recommend cycling around in the peak of summer.

The most fun way to explore the island, however, is by water. You can rent a boat and even hire a jetski in Trogir, but you’ll need a license.

Trogir 2 day itinerary

When you have two days in Trogir you might not be able to do as much exploring around as if you had more time, but 2 days are the perfect amount of time to see the historic center and go on a little boat adventure.

You’ll basically follow the same itinerary as I’ve outlined above for three days, with a little tweak in the evening.

Getting to Trogir

Trogir is serviced by Split International Airport which is only 10 minutes away. You can catch a cab or bus from Split to Trogir or book this shuttle for a hassle free journey from the airport. You can also get a private transfer from Split town.

Getting around Trogir

Trogir old town is a pedestrian only zone and small enough to be easily walkable. You can also rent an e-bike, or e-scooter to zap through town quicker.

If you’d like to explore the surrounding beaches you might want to rent a car or join a boat tour. The island of Ciovo is full of great biking paths that lead to some of the most beautiful beaches. Make sure to rent a MTB and explore its hidden corners.

And if you have a nautical license you can even rent a jetski for the ultimate adventure.

Where to eat and drink in Trogir

Trogir has an insane amount of bars and restaurants on a very small area and you’ll be spoilt with choice when it comes to fish and Mediterranean dishes. Some of the best restaurants in Trogir are Konoba Toma, Fontana, and Škrapa. That being said I had the best lunch at Wild West just across the bridge and I highly recommend you check them out if you’re craving a great burger or BBQ.

Why visit Trogir

Trogir is a beautiful and historic town that offers a perfect blend of history, architecture, culture, stunning scenery, delicious food, and outdoor activities. It’s a destination that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. Trogir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been declared the most beautiful island city in the world by National Geographic.

Best time to visit Trogir

The best time to visit Trogir is in late spring or early autumn when the temperatures are pleasantly warm and the touristic crowds are manageable. Like most of Croatia, Trogir gets really busy and extremely hot during the high season in summer.

As a rule of thumb, I would advise you to avoid Croatia in the peak of summer. It just gets too hot, too crowded, and too expensive. I believe you’ll have a much better experience in late spring or early Autumn.
