I visited Ostuni with my mom during a week-long Puglia road trip and came back twice because I liked it so much. Admittedly, the weather was awful the first time and I refused to let grey skies have the final word on the White City.

I stayed just outside the old town because I wanted straightforward parking and luggage logistics. After walking the historic lanes, driving in from the coast and seeing Ostuni from the surrounding hills, I still think that was the smartest choice for our trip.

Ostuni is compact, but the right area still matters for parking, hills, views and whether you can walk home after dinner.

That does not make it the right choice for everyone. Stay immediately around Centro Storico if you have a rental car, heavy luggage or want easier access. Choose the countryside if a pool, olive-grove setting and road trips matter more than walking to dinner.

Ostuni rises on a hill more than 200 m (656 ft) above sea level. The whitewashed historic center occupies the upper hill, while the 19th-century and modern town spreads south and east. The countryside extends through olive groves toward the Adriatic coast.

The difference between areas is less about sightseeing distance and more about access and the type of stay you want. Centro Storico has the atmosphere, the surrounding town makes parking and arrivals easier, and the countryside offers pools, masserie and road-trip flexibility.

Are There Any Areas to Avoid in Ostuni?

There are no central areas of Ostuni I would avoid for safety reasons. The bigger risk is booking somewhere inconvenient for the way you are traveling.

• Deep inside Centro Storico with a car: beautiful once you arrive, irritating if you expect to drive to the door or park beside the property.
• At the top of the old town with heavy luggage: manageable with a small bag, much less charming with a large suitcase and several steep lanes.
• Near Ostuni train station for sightseeing: the station is roughly 3 km (1.9 mi) outside town on the coastal plain.
• A remote villa without a car: potentially lovely until every coffee, meal and grocery run requires a taxi.
• The coast outside summer: Villanova and the marina can be quiet and seasonal, with far less dining and atmosphere than the White City.

With a rental car, I would favor the streets immediately around Centro Storico or a countryside property with confirmed parking over the pedestrian historic center.

Centro Storico has the most atmospheric accommodation in Ostuni, including historic hotels, converted stone suites, rooftop terraces and small apartments hidden inside the whitewashed lanes.

Immediately outside the historic center, the hotel selection is broader and arrivals are far easier. In the countryside, accommodation becomes part of the trip, with pools, gardens, olive groves, trulli and restaurants inside restored masserie.

I would not choose on star rating alone. In Ostuni, the practical details matter more: exact location, vehicle access, parking, stairs, room views and whether you can walk to dinner. I have kept the list selective and prioritized hotels that make sense for the type of trip described—not places that merely look impressive in photos.

Centro Storico is the best area to stay in Ostuni for most first-time visitors. The cathedral, Arco Scoppa, defensive walls, viewpoints, restaurants and most-photographed lanes are all packed onto the upper hill.

Staying here lets you see the White City when it feels most special: early in the morning, around sunset and after the day-trippers leave. I would happily pay a little more for that on a one- or two-night trip.

The old town begins above Piazza della Libertà and climbs toward the cathedral. Properties close to the lower gates are generally easier with luggage; rooms near Via Cattedrale put you in the most atmospheric part but can involve a longer uphill arrival. Google Maps was almost useless in the maze when I visited. Embrace getting lost while sightseeing, but get precise arrival instructions from your hotel first.

I loved wandering these streets, but the views from the walls and terraces are the real magic. For sunset, try for a table at Borgo Antico or Bar Perso. If you want the lanes and skyline explained rather than merely photographed, this private walking tour of Ostuni lasts around 90 minutes.

The drawbacks are real. Non-resident vehicles are restricted, the lanes are steep, and historic buildings may have no elevator. Summer evenings around the busiest restaurant streets can also be noisy. “Parking available” may mean a paid space outside the walls rather than a garage at the property.

FIND OSTUNI TOWN DEALS

The streets immediately around Centro Storico offer the best balance of walkability and practical access. This includes the lower streets around Piazza della Libertà, the elegant 19th-century blocks south of the old town and hotels on the eastern and northern approaches.

This is where I stayed, and I would do the same again on a Puglia road trip. We could leave the car outside the restricted lanes, move our bags without needing a tiny three-wheeler and still walk to the old town for dinner. The difference between “inside” and “outside” the center was a few minutes; the difference in stress was much larger.

For the closest access, search around Piazza della Libertà, Via Matteo Renato Imbriani and the lower end of Corso Giuseppe Mazzini. Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and the southern side of town are quieter and can deliver excellent skyline views, including around Piazzetta Martiri delle Foibe, but check the uphill return.

The newer town also has ordinary conveniences the old lanes lack: supermarkets, pharmacies, bakeries and a broader range of parking. The pasticciotti at Pasticciotti Tradizionali on Piazza Pietro Sansone were the best I had on the entire trip, and that is not a sentence I write lightly in Puglia.

The compromise is atmosphere. Some modern streets are pleasant rather than magical, and the nicest views may come with a hill. Still, for travelers with a car, this is the part of Ostuni I would recommend most confidently.

The countryside around Ostuni is where the accommodation itself becomes part of the trip. White farmhouses sit among olive trees, many with pools, restaurants, gardens and rooms carved into old stone buildings. A few nights in a masseria can be as memorable as Ostuni itself.

But the countryside is not one neat neighborhood. South and west of town put you closer to Ceglie Messapica, Cisternino and the Valle d’Itria. North and east toward the coastal plain shorten the drive to Villanova, Pilone and the beaches. Check the actual route, not just the property’s Ostuni postal address.

A car gives you the freedom to visit Ostuni at sunset, drive to a different beach each day and make easy trips to Cisternino, Locorotondo, Alberobello and Monopoli. It also means you need to moderate the wine tastings. I skipped them while driving, which was responsible and deeply annoying. However, two nights is ideal for most first-time visitors. That gives you an afternoon and sunset, one unhurried day and a final morning before moving on. It also lets you experience the White City after the day-trippers leave.

Is Ostuni Worth Visiting?

Ostuni is absolutely worth visiting, and I preferred it to several more hyped Puglia stops. The whitewashed streets are beautiful, but the town’s position above the olive plain is what makes it memorable. Approaching from the coast, I had several genuine jaw-drop moments before we even parked.

Ostuni is especially good for sunset, food and aimless walking. I had an excellent octopus sandwich at Doppio Gusto, and the owner was a gem. Add one proper aperitivo with a view; this is not the place to save €3 and sit beside a car park.

The historic center is small enough to explore in a day, so Ostuni does not need a week of intensive sightseeing. Stay longer for a masseria, beaches and the surrounding Valle d’Itria rather than a long attraction checklist.

Best Time to Visit Ostuni

My favorite times to visit Ostuni are late April through May and September through early October. The weather is generally comfortable for walking, accommodation prices are more reasonable and the historic center feels less like a whitewashed queue.

June is a good compromise if you want warmer beach weather without the full pressure of July and August. Peak summer brings the highest prices, hottest afternoons and most difficult parking. The Cavalcata di Sant’Oronzo from August 25–27 is an atmospheric time to visit, but accommodation should be booked well ahead.

Getting to Ostuni

Ostuni is accessible by air, train, bus and car, although the most convenient option depends heavily on whether you are staying in town or in the surrounding countryside.

By Air: Brindisi Airport is the closest airport, roughly 35–37 km (22–23 mi) from Ostuni. Bari Airport is around 100 km (62 mi) away. Compare both flight prices and onward transport before booking because the cheapest flight does not always produce the easiest arrival.

By Train: Ostuni sits on the Adriatic railway line, with useful regional connections toward Bari, Monopoli, Brindisi and Lecce. The station is roughly 3 km (1.9 mi) below the city on the coastal plain. A local bus usually connects the station with the center in around 15 minutes, but schedules vary by day and season.

By Car: Driving is the easiest option for a countryside stay, beach trips and a wider Puglia itinerary. Compare current prices through Discover Cars and choose a realistically sized vehicle. Tiny Puglian lanes and oversized rental cars are not natural friends.

Getting Around Ostuni

The best way to explore Centro Storico and the surrounding town is on foot. The historic center is compact and pedestrianized, but the lanes are steep, uneven and sometimes slippery. Wear shoes with grip; polished stone and rain are a mischievous combination.

A car becomes useful for masserie, beaches and day trips. Ostuni’s coastline stretches for about 17 km (10.5 mi), and the beaches are not concentrated along one simple waterfront below town. Many natural sections require parking followed by a walk or seasonal shuttle.

For street parking in Puglia, white lines usually indicate free spaces, blue lines indicate paid parking and yellow lines are reserved spaces. Always read the sign beside the exact bay because local and seasonal rules override the paint. Do not drive into Centro Storico unless your accommodation has provided explicit, current ZTL instructions and arranged any necessary authorization.

Stay in Villanova or another coastal settlement only if the beach is the main event and you accept driving to Ostuni for sightseeing and dinner. Coastal services can be quiet and seasonal outside summer.

Masseria Le Carrube has the most useful position for combining Ostuni, the olive-grove countryside and the northern section of Ostuni’s coast.

For views over the olive plain and Adriatic, book high inside Centro Storico. For the more dramatic view of the White City itself, stay immediately outside the old walls or on the southern and eastern slopes.

Always reserve a named view category. A hotel’s rooftop may have a spectacular panorama while its standard rooms face the neighboring building.
