What is Istria and why visit?

Istria is a stunning peninsula located north-western corner of Croatia, bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the west and the Gulf of Kvarner to the north.

With its mix of rolling hills, lush vineyards, charming coastal towns, crystal clear waters and yummy local cusine, it’s the perfect destination for your next summer vacation.

Over the centuries, this region has been influenced by Roman, Venetian, and Austro-Hungarian cultures, each leaving its mark on the architecture and lifestyle. Walking through towns like Pula, you can almost hear the whispers of gladiators as you stand before the ancient Arena, a well-preserved Roman amphitheater that once hosted fierce battles.

Main Towns to visit in Istria:

  1. Pula: Home to the famed Roman Arena, Pula boasts a lively atmosphere and a vibrant waterfront. Beyond its historical sights, enjoy fresh seafood at local konobas while gazing out over the sea—a truly delightful experience!
  2. Rovinj: This picturesque coastal gem looks like it jumped straight out of a painting. With its narrow cobbled streets, vibrant buildings, and a hill topped by the stunning St. Euphemia Church, Rovinj is a photographer’s dream. Don’t forget to indulge in gelato while wandering the waterfront—you’ll thank me later!

Best Things to do in Istria, Croatia

As someone who frequently sneaks across the border to climb Istria’s rugged cliffs, sip coffee by the sea, and revisit childhood favorites like the wake park in Porec, I have gathered a treasure trove of insider tips to help you navigate the best things to do in Istria. Here are my recommendations.

Pula arena

1. Visit the Ancient Arena in Pula

Pula is the largest city in Istria, situated on the southern tip of Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula. It is known for its well-preserved Roman ruins, including the iconic amphitheater which hosts concerts and events during the summer months. A visit to the Pula arena, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world, is an absolute must. Just make sure to book your ticket in advance.

Pula Arena is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. This stunning structure dates back to the 1st century AD and could hold up to 20,000 spectators. The Arena is an absolute must when in Istria, just make sure to book your ticket in advance.

If you can, attend one of the many concerts or events held here during the summer months. Just be sure to snag your ticket in advance, or you might find yourself shut out, staring longingly at the people inside (trust me, it’s not a good look).

After you soak in the ancient vibes of the Arena, take a leisurely stroll through Pula’s charming Old Town. The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings and motherly Roman ruins.

The Brijuni Islands once served as the glamorous summer residence of Josip Broz Tito, the former president of Yugoslavia. Tito was a big deal in this part of the world and hosted countless global leaders here.

He also had a penchant for exotic animals, which led to the establishment of a safari park on the islands. It’s said that even the lions on the islands were treated like royalty!

Although the lions are no longer present today, you’ll still see the Indian elephant Lanka, llamas, zebras, Indian sacred cows and ostriches. Covering 736 hectares and spanning over 14 islands, Brijuni National Park is a must-visit in Istria.

wine tasting

8. Enjoy Wine Tasting in Istria’s Vineyards

If you love wine, then Istria’s vineyard scene is a must-visit. With a history of winemaking that stretches back centuries, Istria is one of Europe’s oldest wine regions. The combination of hilly terrain and a beautiful coastline creates several microclimates, allowing a variety of grape types to thrive.

Istria is divided into three main soil types—Red, Grey, and White—each contributing to the unique flavors of the wines. Whether you prefer a robust red or a crisp white, you’re in for a treat.

Istrian Reds to try:

  • Refosk: One of Istria’s most beloved wines, Refosk is known for its deep ruby color and rich flavors of dark berries, cherries, and spice. It pairs beautifully with grilled meats and Istrian cuisine, making it a top pick for hearty meals. Be sure to add Refosk to your tasting list!
  • Teran: Often seen as Refosk’s “sibling,” Teran offers a lighter body with intense flavors of red fruit, juicy acidity, and a hint of earthiness. It’s perfect for those who enjoy a refreshing red, pairing well with traditional dishes like Istrian lamb or meat sauce pasta.
  • Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon: Although not native to Istria, both of these varietals thrive here. Merlot is smooth and velvety with notes of plum and chocolate, while Cabernet Sauvignon is bold, showcasing blackcurrant and cedar. Both are excellent choices for fans of internationally recognized wines.

Istrian Whites to try:

  • Malvazija: The crown jewel of Istrian whites, Malvazija features bright flavors of citrus, green apple, and floral notes. It’s usually dry with a refreshing acidity, making it great with seafood, salads, and lighter pasta dishes. Perfect for konoba dining or a seaside meal!
  • Pinot Grigio: A crisp and refreshing varietal, Pinot Grigio offers notes of pear, melon, and honeysuckle. It’s an ideal aperitif and pairs wonderfully with grilled fish or chicken salads.
  • Chardonnay: Thriving in Istria, Chardonnay can be found in two styles: oaked, with buttery vanilla notes, and unoaked, emphasizing bright fruit flavors. Both styles complement creamy pasta dishes and poultry well.
  • Sauvignon Blanc: Known for its aromatic intensity, Istrian Sauvignon Blanc presents grassy notes with citrus and green apple. This zesty wine is perfect for warm days and pairs nicely with lighter fare like asparagus, goat cheese, or shellfish.

To truly enjoy what Istria has to offer, I highly recommend booking this wine tour from Rovinj. This experience will take you to three well-known wineries where you’ll sample a variety of local wines. You’ll also have the chance to visit Grožnjan, a charming art town known for its vibrant atmosphere and stunning views, and end on a high note with a fabulous 4-course dinner.
