As someone who frequently sneaks across the border to climb Istria’s rugged cliffs, sip coffee by the sea, and revisit childhood favorites like the wake park in Porec, I have gathered a treasure trove of insider tips to help you navigate the best things to do in Istria. Here are my recommendations.

1. Visit the Ancient Arena in Pula

Pula is the largest city in Istria, situated on the southern tip of Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula. It is known for its well-preserved Roman ruins, including the iconic amphitheater which hosts concerts and events during the summer months. A visit to the Pula arena, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world, is an absolute must. Just make sure to book your ticket in advance.

I find the cave to be a bit tricky to get to if swimming or walking so I highly recommend this kayaking tour instead. It’s much easier and faster to paddle there.

Feeling adventurous? Try your hand at cliff diving. But remember, it’s at your own risk, so do your homework before taking the plunge! The rocks offer a great spot for getting your heart racing, followed by a refreshing swim in the sea.

7. Explore Brijuni National Park

The Brijuni Islands once served as the glamorous summer residence of Josip Broz Tito, the former president of Yugoslavia. Tito was a big deal in this part of the world and hosted countless global leaders here.

He also had a penchant for exotic animals, which led to the establishment of a safari park on the islands. It’s said that even the lions on the islands were treated like royalty!

Although the lions are no longer present today, you’ll still see the Indian elephant Lanka, llamas, zebras, Indian sacred cows and ostriches. Covering 736 hectares and spanning over 14 islands, Brijuni National Park is a must-visit in Istria.

The easiest way to visit Brijuni is by joining a boat tour from the charming fishing village of Fazana. I recommend this boat tour which will take you around all 14 islands. The tour also includes a stop at Sv. Jerolim (Peacock Island), where you can swim, snorkel, or just relax on the beach.

And what’s the deal with the dinosaurs you might ask? Dinosaurs roamed this area around 130 million years ago, and the discovery of fossils on the seabed in 1992 made Bale the only underwater paleontological site of its kind in Europe.

Perfect for hiking or biking, this scenic trail takes you through vineyards, olive groves, and charming villages. The trail features multiple tunnels and railway bridges and there are several access points, so you can easily choose to hike or bike shorter sections, making it ideal for both casual walkers and serious cyclists. 

Along the way, you’ll find plenty of spots to stop and enjoy breathtaking views of the Istrian countryside. It’s a great way to soak in the natural beauty while getting a good workout!

20. Hike the 7 Waterfalls Trail

The 7 Waterfalls Trail is a stunning hiking trail that takes you through the breathtaking landscapes of Istria showcasing the untamed beauty of the region with its varied terrain, including playful streams, serene pools, and cascading waterfalls.

Trail Overview:

• Length: Approximately 14 kilometers loop track
• Duration: About 4 to 5 hours to complete
• Start Point: Begins near Buzet, at the bridge over the Mirna River close to the Istarsko vodovod (Istrian Waterworks).

The trail includes some steep sections. In some sections ropes are provided for safety, making it important to wear appropriate footwear and take care when navigating.

The hike goes through varied terrain, including shady forests and open fields. you may also come across abandoned coal mine openings along the way, which you can further explore if you have flashlights.

There is only one restaurant (in Kotli) along the way that might not be open so it’s important that you pack enough water and snacks. I’d recommend you also grab your swimwear and a towel as there are several beautiful spots for a dip along the way.

21. Visit the Picturesque Kotli

Nestled in the hills of Istria, the village of Kotli is a hidden gem that captivates visitors with its enchanting atmosphere. This charming village is defined by its stunning natural beauty, with the Mirna River flowing through.

The karst landscape contributes to the unique geological features of Kotli, where you’ll find natural swimming holes, or bazenčki, formed by the erosive power of water on the limestone. These clear blue pools invite you to dip in and cool off during hot summer days.

A highlight of Kotli is the historical watermill, which adds to the village’s charm. This well-preserved structure, set against the backdrop of the small canyon, serves as a reminder of the region’s agricultural heritage. It’s a lovely spot to relax, take photos, and appreciate the blend of natural beauty and history.

22. Try Rock Climbing in Istria

As a rock climbing enthusiast, I can tell you that Istria offers some fabulous crags for climbers of all levels. While they may be on the smaller side, the diversity is what makes this area so exciting!

• Rovinj: Known for its beautiful sea views and deep solo opportunities, Rovinj is perfect if you want to combine climbing and swimming.
• Ponte Porton: This spot is ideal for beginners and offers a range of routes to build your skills.
• Kamena Vrata: Here, you’ll find varied climbing routes with easy access, making it a great choice if you’re travelling in a group with different climbing levels.

With countless crags to choose from, you’ll find everything from easy beginner routes, to overhangs and even deep solo. It’s a great way to challenge yourself while enjoying the beautiful Istrian landscape!

23. Go Cliff Diving in Kamenjak NP

Kamenjak is not just famous for its breathtaking natural beauty; it’s also a hotspot for cliff diving! If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping experience, head over to the very south of stunning national park, where the rugged cliffs offer perfect jumps into the sparkling Adriatic waters.

The Safari Bar nearby is the ideal place to unwind after your cliff diving adventures. With its laid-back atmosphere, you can sip on a cold drink while watching the sun set over the sea. This spot holds nostalgic memories for me; it’s one of those places I used to hang out with friends when I was younger, and it never fails to deliver a good time!
