Share your love

Nestled along the sparkling Adriatic Sea, Rovinj is an enchanting coastal town. With its cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and vibrant atmosphere, there’s something magical about it.

Rovinj has been a cherished destination since my childhood days when our family boat found its harbor nearby. It’s also just a short drive from my home in Slovenia so I like coming back here at leas yearly, even if it’s just to take in the sunset.

Now, with countless visits under my belt, I’ve curated the perfect itinerary to help you make the most of your time here, whether that’s just for a day or more.

Below I’m sharing crafted itineraries and recommendations on the best things to do in and around Rovinj in 1, 2, and 4 days.

Rovinj itinerary overview – the best of Rovinj, Croatia

The carefully crafted itineraries below, blend must-do experiences with hidden gems and local favorites. You’ll discover iconic Rovinj attractions like the Church of St. Euphemia (with incredible views), off-the-beaten-path destinations like Bale and Groznjan, and savor the region’s culinary delights.

I highly recommend you also take a scenic boat ride to uncover secluded coves, and a chance to spot dolphins.

How many days in Rovinj?

Rovinj Old Town is tiny and can be explored in just a few hours. However, if you’d like to delve deeper into the cuisine and relax at the beach, you’ll need at least one full day. With more than one day in Rovinj, you’ll be able to do some of the tours mentioned below and explore beyond the city.

Where to stay in Rovinj

Rovinj Old Town is the perfect place to stay for first-time visitors. As most of the Old Town is pedestrianized, it is easy to explore Rovinj on foot. However, if you’re arriving by car, you’ll need to park away from your accommodation. Alternatively, further out, you’ll find larger hotels, tourist resorts, and campsites, which are more suitable options if you have wheels.

Rovinj 4 day itinerary

Day 1 – Old Town

In my experience, a guided walking tour is the ultimate crash course in town charm and history, no matter the destination! For Rovinj I highly recommend this walking tour led by a local guide who’s your ticket to Rovinj’s secrets.

You’ll wander past landmarks like St. Euphemia’s Church and Balbi’s Arch, while your guide spills the beans on Rovinj’s Venetian history while getting insider tips on the best shops and eateries along the way.

Rovinj Harbour

Rovinj Harbor is the lively center of this charming coastal town. Take in the view of the fishing boats floating against a backdrop of pastel-colored buildings, creating a classic Mediterranean view. Take a leisurely walk along the waterfront with its cozy cafes and restaurants serving fresh seafood. Observe fishermen bringing in their catch or take a boat tour to discover nearby islands and secret coves.

Trg Tita Marsala

Trg Tita Marsala is a lively square lined with historic buildings that now host various cafes and restaurants. Named after Marshal Tito, the former Yugoslav leader, this vibrant plaza is almost an extension of the harbor promenade.

Balbi’s Arch

Built in the 17th century by the Venetian nobleman Daniel Balbi, the Balbi’s Arch served as the entrance to the fortified city. As you approach Balbi’s Arch, keep an eye out for its intricate design, blending Venetian and local architectural styles.

Fun fact: Legend has it that if you pass beneath the arch with a loved one, you’re destined for everlasting happiness.

Grisia Street

Dating back to the 17th century, Grisia Street was initially constructed to connect the town’s upper and lower districts. It runs from Balbi’s Arch all the way up to the Church of St. Euphemia.

Today, Grisia Street is dotted with galleries and workshops showcasing the talents of local and international artist, from paintings and sculptures to ceramics and jewelry.

Every other Sunday in August, an art festival takes place here, transforming Grisia Street into an open-air gallery. What makes it unique is that the origin or reputation of the artist doesn’t matter. Anyone can exhibit here.

Church of St. Euphemia

Perched atop a hill in Rovinj, the Church of St. Euphemia dominates the town’s skyline. It was built in the 18th century atop a hill in Baroque style and it’s become the icon of Rovinj.

Originally dedicated to Saint George, it now solely honors Euphemia. Entrance to the church is free and inside you’ll find the relics of Saint Euphemia housed in a sixth-century Roman sarcophagus.

However, the real star here are the views! Climb its bell tower for sweeping views over the Adriatic sea, the nearby islands and the Istrian coast. These views are absolutely worth the 200 steps!

Riva

While the northern and western parts of the peninsula are rocky and hard to access, there is a beautiful waterfront promenade on the southern end, stretching from Trg Marsala Tita to the Batana Eco museum, where the cliffside bars start.

Batana Eco-Museum

A batana is a traditional wooden fishing boat from Rovinj, Croatia. It has a flat bottom, making it ideal for navigating shallow waters. Originally propelled by oars or sails, batanas are still used for fishing today.

The Batana Eco-Museum offers insights into the history, craftsmanship, and usage of the batana, as well as its significance to the community. Learn about the techniques of boat building, the role of fishing in local culture, and the sustainable practices advocated by the museum.

Sailing and dolphins

Embarking on a sailing adventure around Rovinj offers a different angle of the coastal town. Cruise past Katerina Island, Figarola, and Sv. Ivan, taking in stunning views of Rovinj’s skyline.

This private sailing tour goes beyond sightseeing, delving into local culture and history with a knowledgeable skipper. You can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or stand-up paddling in the crystal-clear waters. And don’t miss the homemade tapas and local wine served onboard.

On this boat tour you’ll also have a good chance of spotting dolphins (especially around sunset). The most common species in this region are the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis).

If the sailboat is outside of your budget, consider this sunset kayaking tour instead.

Dinner at Male Madlene

Male Madlene restaurant is a cozy gem with breathtaking views that captures the essence of Rovinj’s charm.

Upon arrival, you’ll be led through the kitchen to a private terrace overlooking the sea and sunset, setting the stage for a romantic dinner. The ambiance is intimate, offering the perfect backdrop for a memorable evening. Bookings are essential.

There’s no à la carte menu; instead, guests can choose from set menus ranging from 3 to 5 courses. While the food may take time, each dish is crafted with care, ooked fresh and served with elegance.

Day 2 – Coastal beauty

Rovinj is surrounded by stunning beaches, cute islets, and lush parks. You can choose to spend the full day sunbathing and splashing in the Adriatic Sea, but I recommend you take some time to also explore the Brijuni NP,

Rovinj Market

Start the day at Rovinj Market, a vibrant hub of activity that offers a taste of local life. Here, you can immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of traditional Istrian culture and pack up a picnic basket for the day.

From fresh fruits and vegetables to locally sourced olive oil and wine, the market boasts a wide array of products. Don’t miss the chance to interact with friendly vendors and sample some of the region’s culinary delights and buy some to take home.

Zlatni Rat

Zlatni Rt Park, also Golden Cape, shields Rovinj and its harbor while stretching along the picturesque bays of Lone, Škaraba, Montauro, and Zlatna. The best way to explore the bays is from the water so make sure to book this Kayak tour of the Golden Cape.

In 1890, entrepreneur Georg Hütterott envisioned the cape as a health resort and began afforesting the area. It was later designated a protected area in 1948 and a forest park in 1961. The park’s highlight is the Cedar star (Zvijezda cedrova), where tall Himalayan cedars are arranged in a six-pointed star, inspired by English landscape parks.

  • Vestar Beach is a sheltered bay ideal for families and non-campers, promising unforgettable moments by the sea.

Brijuni National Park

The Brijuni Islands were once the official residence of Josip Broz Tito, the former president of Yugoslavia. Known as the islands of peace and a meeting point of the Non-Aligned, the Brijuni are where Tito Here hosted numerous foreign delegations and political meetings.

As the only national park in Istria, the Brijuni Islands cover 736 square hectares and showcase a diverse array of animal species and rich flora. The islands boast a unique Safari Park on Veliki Brijun, home to a mix of Istrian and exotic fauna, including Indian elephants, llamas, zebras, and ostriches.

You can access the islands on this boat tour from the fishing village of Fazana. You’ll get to sail around the archipelago’s 14 islands. You’ll learn about the area’s rich history with an audio guide before stopping at Sv. Jerolim, also known as Peacock Island, to swim, snorkel, or relax on the beach. If you don’t have your own wheels, opt for this tour with pickup in Rovinj instead.

Day 3 – Truffles and wine

Positioned perfectly on the Istrian peninsula, Rovinj offers easy access to some of the region’s most picturesque Istrian towns. If you’re short on time, I highly recommend you join this tour which will let you experience all the highlights in just a day.

You’ll visit Porec (and see the Lim Fjord on the way), home to the UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica. Explore Grožnjan, known for its artistic vibe and galleries. Then, venture to Motovun for medieval charm and scenic views and wrap it off with a delicious truffle tasting.

Lim Fjord

Lim Fiord is a stunning part of the 35 km long Lim Valley in Istria, with steep mountains rising up to 100 meters on both sides. The fjord spans over 10 km, reaching depths of 30 meters and widths of around 600 meters. Its brackish water supports rich plant and animal life, making it ideal for fish and oyster farms.

In Lim Fiord, you can discover diverse wildlife and enjoy free climbing on the northern cliffs, or explore Illyrian forts and Romualdo’s cave, tied to a hermit priest and a Benedictine monastery.

As a protected reserve, Lim Fiord bans motor crafts, fishing, and diving, but you can still see this natural phenomenon from the top bay on this boat tour (departing from Vrsar).

Porec

Porec is a cute coastal town just a short drive from Rovinj. Explore its UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica, and wander through the charming streets of the Old Town, lined with historic buildings and vibrant cafes. I love the wakeboarding park in Porec, it is so much fun!

Groznjan

In the 1960s, Groznjan was abandoned and artists from around the world began to settle there, revitalizing the town and turning it into an artistic hub. Today, Grožnjan is known for its numerous art galleries, studios, and vibrant artistic community, as well as incredible Istrian wine.

This hilltop village is surrounded by vineyards and here you’ll find a plethora of various wineries to visit. If you have the time and stamina, you can’t go wrong with this incredible wine tasting!

Day 4 – Pula and Bale

Pula

Pula is the largest city in Istria, situated on the southern tip of Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula. It is known for its well-preserved Roman ruins, including the iconic amphitheater which hosts concerts and events during the summer months. A visit to the Pula arena, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world, is an absolute must. Just make sure to book your ticket in advance.

The city’s charming Old Town features narrow cobblestone streets lined with historic buildings, Roman ruins and vibrant shops and bars. I highly recommend this walking tour of Pula which will take you to all the highlights including Kastel.

Bale

Bale are one of the best kept secrets in Istria and I’m sure they’ll take your breath away!

This historic town is nestled amidst olive groves and vineyards, where narrow cobblestone streets surround the 15th-century Bembo family castle. Bale has a unique artistic atmosphere and the town hosts various cultural events throughout the summer, including the Last Minute Open Jazz Festival.

Make sure to stroll the narrow streets and check out the Gothic-Renaissance façade of Kaštel Bembo. If you’re lucky you can catch a gig at Kamene price too!

Dinner at La Grisa in Bale

With locally sourced ingredients and a menu highlighting the region’s flavors, La Grisa is a must-visit for food lovers. The lamb here is to die for (I drove to Bale just for it more than once!) and they have a fantastic wine list too.

The restaurant feels very intimate and sophisticated and the view from the outside terrace is breathtaking. Make sure to book a table ahead of time and ask for one with a view.

Best time to visit Rovinj

The best time to visit Rovinj is in the shoulder season which runs April till mid-June, and September to October. This is when the crowds are manageable, the weather is warm and pleasant, and the prices more affordable. If you visit in Autumn you’ll also have the benefit of the warmer sea.

As a rule of thumb, I would advise you to avoid Croatia in the peak of summer. It just gets too hot, too crowded, and too expensive. You’ll have a much better experience visiting in late spring or early Autumn.
