Located on Croatia’s coast of the Istrian Peninsula, Rovinj is a picturesque town known for its cobblestone streets, colorful facades, and the towering spire of St. Euphemia’s Church.

Perched on a small round peninsula Rovinj is a postcard-perfect compact town with breathtaking views in all directions. Rovinj’s history and architecture are influenced by ancient Illyrians, Roman settlers, and Venetian conquerors.

Aside from its postcard-perfect scenery and rich history, Rovinj is a lively coastal town with a vibrant atmosphere, beautiful beaches and intriguing hinterlands.

Where to stay in Rovinj

Rovinj Old Town is the perfect place to stay for first-time visitors. As most of the Old Town is pedestrianized, it is easy to explore Rovinj on foot. However, if you’re arriving by car, you’ll need to park away from your accommodation. Alternatively, further out, you’ll find larger hotels, tourist resorts, and campsites, which are more suitable options if you have wheels.

Best things to do in Rovinj Old Town

Rovinj’s Old Town is nestled on a headland jutting into the Adriatic Sea and filled with vibrantly painted houses, and cobblestone streets that wind down to the water. Once residences, many buildings now house artist studios and boutique shops.

Getting lost in these charming streets, peeking at the sea views between houses and discovering hidden cliffside bars is my favorite thing to do in Rovinj. However, if it’s your first time in Rovinj I recommend you get acquainted with the town on a walking tour and explore the best Rovinj attractions listed below before wandering off on your own.

Walking tour

Explore art shops on Grisia Street

Dating back to the 17th century, Grisia Street was initially constructed to connect the town’s upper and lower districts. It runs from Balbi’s Arch all the way up to the Church of St. Euphemia.

Today, Grisia Street is dotted with galleries and workshops showcasing the talents of local and international artists, from paintings and sculptures to ceramics and jewelry.

Every other Sunday in August, an art festival takes place here, transforming Grisia Street into an open-air gallery. What makes it unique is that the origin or reputation of the artist doesn’t matter. Anyone can exhibit here.

Take in the views from the Church of St. Euphemia

Perched atop a hill in Rovinj, the Church of St. Euphemia dominates the town’s skyline. It was built in the 18th century atop a hill in Baroque style and it’s become the icon of Rovinj.

Originally dedicated to Saint George, it now solely honors Euphemia. Entrance to the church is free and inside you’ll find the relics of Saint Euphemia housed in a sixth-century Roman sarcophagus.

However, the real star here are the views! Climb its bell tower for sweeping views over the Adriatic sea, the nearby islands and the Istrian coast. These views are absolutely worth the 200 steps!

Stroll down the Riva

While the northern and western parts of the peninsula are rocky and hard to access, there is a beautiful waterfront promenade on the southern end, stretching from Trg Marsala Tita to the Batana Eco museum, where the cliffside bars start.

Batana Eco-Museum

A batana is a traditional wooden fishing boat from Rovinj, Croatia. It has a flat bottom, making it ideal for navigating shallow waters. Originally propelled by oars or sails, batanas are still used for fishing today.

The Batana Eco-Museum offers insights into the history, craftsmanship, and usage of the batana, as well as its significance to the community. Learn about the techniques of boat building, the role of fishing in local culture, and the sustainable practices advocated by the museum.

Kayak or cycle Zlatni Rat

Zlatni Rt Park, also Golden Cape, shields Rovinj and its harbor while stretching along the picturesque bays of Lone, Škaraba, Montauro, and Zlatna. The best way to explore the bays is from the water so make sure to book this kayak tour of the Golden Cape.

In 1890, entrepreneur Georg Hütterott envisioned the cape as a health resort and began afforesting the area. It was later designated a protected area in 1948 and a forest park in 1961. The park’s highlight is the Cedar star (Zvijezda cedrova), where tall Himalayan cedars are arranged in a six-pointed star, inspired by English landscape parks.

Set sail and spot dolphins

Embarking on a sailing adventure around Rovinj offers a unique way to explore the coastal town. Cruise past Katerina Island, Figarola, and Sv. Ivan, taking in stunning views of Rovinj’s skyline.

The fjord spans over 10 km, reaching depths of 30 meters and widths of around 600 meters. Its brackish water supports rich plant and animal life, making it ideal for fish and oyster farms.

From fresh fruits and vegetables to locally sourced olive oil and wine, the market boasts a wide array of products. Don’t miss the chance to interact with friendly vendors and sample some of the region’s culinary delights and buy some to take home.

Wine tasting

The Istria wine region, one of Europe’s oldest, boasts a rich viticultural history. Its hilly terrain and extensive coastline create diverse microclimates, nurturing a variety of grape varietals and yielding a wide range of wines. Divided into Red, Grey, and White Istria soils, each with unique properties, the region produces wines with distinct flavors.

Popular reds include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and local favorites like Refosk, and Teran. Malvazija is the queen white of Istria, but Pinot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon are also popular choices.

Porec is a cute coastal town just a short drive from Rovinj. Explore its UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica, and wander through the charming streets of the Old Town, lined with historic buildings and vibrant cafes. I love the wakeboarding park in Porec, it is so much fun!

Motovun

Motovun is a gorgeous fortified medieval hilltop town in the Istrian hinterlands that’s easy to reach from Rovinj. Wander through its narrow cobblestone streets, admire ancient architecture, and soak in panoramic views of the Istrian countryside from the town’s hilltop perch.

Groznjan

In the 1960s, Groznjan was abandoned and artists from around the world began to settle there, revitalizing the town and turning it into an artistic hub. Today, Grožnjan is known for its numerous art galleries, studios, and vibrant artistic community.

Pula

Pula is the largest city in Istria, situated on the southern tip of Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula. This historic town is nestled amidst olive groves and vineyards, where narrow cobblestone streets surround the 15th-century Bembo family castle. Bale has a unique artistic atmosphere and the town hosts various cultural events throughout the summer, including the Last Minute Open Jazz Festival.

Make sure to stroll the narrow streets and check out the Gothic-Renaissance façade of Kaštel Bembo. If you’re lucky you can catch a gig at Kamene price and make sure to try the lamb at La Grisa!

How many days in Rovinj?

Rovinj Old Town is tiny and can be explored in just a few hours. However, if you’d like to delve deeper into the cuisine and relax at the beach, you’ll a full day. With more than one day in Rovinj, you’ll be able to do some of the tours mentioned above and explore beyond the city.

Getting to Rovinj

• By Air: The nearest airports are Pula Airport (PUY), approximately 40 km away, and Rijeka Airport (RJK), around 110 km away. From there, you can rent a car or take this private transfer to Rovinj.
• By Car: Rovinj is accessible via the A8 highway if you’re coming from the north or the A9 highway if you’re coming from the south. If you’re renting a car, keep in mind that the old town is closed to traffic but parking is available nearby.
• By Public Transport: Rovinj is served by bus routes connecting it to major cities in Croatia and neighboring countries. Buses operate regularly, making it convenient to travel to and from the town.

• Taxi: Taxis are readily available in Rovinj and can be hailed on the street or booked in advance. They offer a convenient way to travel short distances or reach destinations outside the town center.
• Boat: During the summer months, water taxis operate in Rovinj, providing transportation to nearby islands and coastal areas. This scenic mode of transport offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea.

Best time to visit Rovinj

The best time to visit Rovinj is in the shoulder season which runs April till mid-June, and September to October. This is when the crowds are manageable, the weather is warm and pleasant, and the prices more affordable. If you visit in Autumn you’ll also have the benefit of the warmer sea.

As a rule of thumb, I would advise you to avoid Croatia in the peak of summer. It just gets too hot, too crowded, and too expensive. You’ll have a much better experience visiting in late spring or early Autumn.
