Where to Stay in Dubrovnik: Best Areas, Hotels & Local Tips for 2026

Choosing your accommodation in Dubrovnik can make or break your trip (and budget!). I’ve visited Dubrovnik many times, and the biggest mistake I see travelers make is booking somewhere that looks nice without checking the stairs, hills, parking, or bus access.

In this guide, I’ll break down the best areas to stay in Dubrovnik, who each one is best for, and the Dubrovnik hotels and apartments I’d actually consider booking.

For most first-time visitors, the best places to stay in Dubrovnik are Old Town, Pile, or Ploče. Old Town is the best place to stay in Dubrovnik if you want to be inside the historic center, while Pile and Ploče are usually better if you want easy access without dragging luggage through the car-free streets and stair-heavy alleys.

If you’re wondering where is best to stay in Dubrovnik for beaches, look at Lapad or Babin Kuk instead. If you’re on a tighter budget or catching ferries and buses, Gruž can work well, but it is not the most atmospheric base for a first Dubrovnik trip.

This guide to where to stay in Dubrovnik will walk you through:

  1. A geographical breakdown of the best areas to stay in Dubrovnik
  2. All the info you need to make an informed decision on the best area for you
  3. A selection of the best accommodation options for each area, budget, and type of accommodation

Where to Stay in Dubrovnik: Best Areas and Suburbs

Dubrovnik is by no means massive, but choosing the right neighborhood to stay can really make or break your holiday.

At its heart lies the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a maze of ancient streets steeped in history and culture. Beyond the Old Town walls, you’ll find Pile and Ploce, both still within walking distance of the Old Town.

For most first time visitors, the Old Town, Pile or Ploce will be the place to be. But you might also consider further neighborhoods like Lapad or Gruž.

If you already know you want a hotel rather than an apartment or guesthouse, see my full guide to the best hotels in Dubrovnik.

Best Areas to Stay in Dubrovnik at a Glance:

Here’s a quick breakdown of the best districts and areas to stay in Dubrovnik:

  • Dubrovnik Old Town: the beating heart of Dubrovnik, the Old Town is the place to be for most visitors.
  • Pile: located to the West just outside the city walls, Pile is a more accessible alternative to the Old Town
  • Ploce: located to the East just outside the city walls, Ploce is a fantastic alternative to the Old Town, especially if you’d like to stay near the beach
  • Boninovo: Situated between Pile and Lapad, Boninovo offers breathtaking views while still within walking distance of Dubrovnik Old Town
  • Lapad: is a bit further from the Old Town but offers some of the best beaches in Dubrovnik
  • Babin Kuk: is an exclusive area at the outskirts with beautiful beaches and luxurious beach resorts
  • Gruz: is the transport hub of Dubrovnik and where you’ll find the bus station and ferry port.

Are There Any Areas to Avoid in Dubrovnik?

Dubrovnik is a safe destination with a low crime rate. But as with every touristic destination, be mindful of pickpocketers and taxi scams. By using common sense, you can enjoy your visit to any area in Dubrovnik safely.

Dubrovnik uphill street
Before You Book, Check the Elevation!

Dubrovnik is not a flat city. A hotel or apartment can look 5 minutes from Old Town on Google Maps and still involve a brutal uphill walk or several flights of stairs.

Before booking, check:

  • Can a taxi stop nearby?
  • How many stairs are between the street and the entrance?
  • Is the walk uphill from Old Town?
  • Is there an elevator?
  • Are you arriving with heavy luggage?

This matters most in Old Town, upper Ploče, Boninovo, and hillside apartments above the city.

Best accommodation in Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik accommodation is all about trade-offs. The best place to stay in Dubrovnik for sightseeing is usually Old Town, Pile, or Ploče, but those areas can also mean stairs, higher prices, limited taxi access, and more summer crowds.

If you want beaches, space, and easier parking, Lapad or Babin Kuk are better. If you’re looking for better value or need ferry and bus access, Gruž and Montovjerna are worth considering.

Below I’ve included my top hotel and apartment picks by area, so you can quickly compare where to stay in Dubrovnik based on location, budget, views, beach access, and how easy it is to actually arrive with luggage.

Where to Stay in Dubrovnik: Old Town or Outside the Walls?

Staying inside Dubrovnik Old Town sounds like the obvious choice, and for some travelers it is. You’ll be steps from Stradun, the City Walls, restaurants, bars, and the Old Port. At night, once the day-trippers leave, the Old Town can feel magical.

But I would not automatically book inside the walls. The Old Town is mostly car-free, many streets involve stairs, and your taxi or transfer may not be able to drop you right at your door. If you have heavy luggage, mobility concerns, or you’re arriving in summer heat, staying just outside the walls in Pile or lower Ploče is often easier.

My honest take: stay inside Old Town if atmosphere matters most. Stay just outside Old Town if you want the best balance of convenience, views, and easier logistics.

Stay inside Old Town if…Stay just outside if…
You want maximum atmosphereYou have heavy luggage
You’re staying 1–2 nightsYou want taxi access nearby
You want restaurants/sights at your doorYou want views of the Old Town
You don’t mind stairs/noiseYou want slightly more peace
Dubrovnik old town

Old Town: Best for Atmosphere and First-Time Sightseeing

Known for: City Walls, Stradun, Rector’s Palace

Best for: atmosphere, sightseeing, short stays, nightlife
Avoid if: you have heavy luggage, mobility issues, or a car
Best stay type: boutique hotels, guesthouses, apartments
Booking tip: check the exact street and stairs before booking

Dubrovnik Old Town is the most atmospheric place to stay in Dubrovnik and the obvious choice if you want to be right inside the historic center. You’ll have Stradun, the Dubrovnik city walls, Rector’s Palace, the Old Port, restaurants, bars, and most major sights right outside your door.

That said, I would only stay inside the walls if you’re happy dealing with stairs, crowds, higher prices, and limited taxi access. The Old Town is mostly car-free, so you may need to walk with luggage from the city gates to your accommodation. It can also be noisy in summer, especially around restaurants and nightlife streets.

Stay here if you want maximum atmosphere and you’re visiting Dubrovnik for one day. Skip it if you have heavy luggage, mobility issues, a car, or you want a quieter stay.

Pile: Best Area to Stay Near Dubrovnik Old Town

Known for: Pile Gate, Fort Lovrijenac, easy Old Town access

Best for: first-time visitors, short stays, sightseeing, easier arrivals
Avoid if: you want beach-resort vibes or a quieter residential base
Best stay type: historic hotels, boutique stays, apartments
Booking tip: stay close to Pile Gate or lower on the hill for easier luggage access

The Pile neighborhood sits just outside the western entrance to the Old Town (Pile Gate) and is ideal if you want to stay close to the Old Town but without the limitations of limited traffic and without the crowds.

For many travelers, Pile is the best area near Dubrovnik Old Town and the best area to stay near Dubrovnik walls because you’re close to the gates without staying deep inside the pedestrian zone.

Accommodation options in Pile include hotels with stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and comfortable apartments. However, keep in mind that parts of Pile stretch uphill and what looks like a short walk from town might be a strenuous uphill battle. I recommend picking accommodation just outside the city walls at the foot of the hill.

Booking tip: choose lower Ploče if you want easier access to Old Town and Banje Beach

Located to the east of the Old Town, Ploce offers breathtaking views of the sea and easy access to the city center. It’s perfect if you want a quieter atmosphere while still being close to the main attractions and have Banje Beach at your doorstep.

Accommodation here ranges from luxury resorts to cozy bed and breakfasts, as well as private apartments and rooms. Again, be mindful of the hills as some parts of Ploce are fairly steep. I recommend staying just outside the city walls or along the coast.

Getting to Dubrovnik, Croatia

By Air: Dubrovnik is served by Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), about 30–40 minutes from the Old Town depending on traffic. You can get into the city by airport shuttle, taxi, Uber, or private transfer. If you’re arriving in peak season, a pre-booked transfer is the easiest option, especially if your accommodation is near Old Town, Pile, Ploče, or up a hill.

By Sea: Dubrovnik can be reached by ferry from nearby islands and other Croatian coastal destinations. Ferries arrive in Gruž, which makes Gruž a practical area to stay in Dubrovnik if you’re catching ferries, using the bus station, or planning onward travel.

By Car: Driving to Dubrovnik gives you flexibility, especially for day trips, but parking is limited and expensive near the Old Town. The historic center is pedestrian-only, so avoid staying deep inside the walls with a car unless your accommodation has a very clear parking plan. If you’re driving, look at Dubrovnik accommodation in Lapad, Babin Kuk, Gruž, Montovjerna, or hotels with confirmed parking.

By Bus: Dubrovnik is easy to reach by bus, with direct connections from major Croatian cities like Split and Zagreb. The main bus station is in Gruž, close to the port, and local buses or taxis connect it with Old Town, Pile, Ploče, Lapad, and Babin Kuk.

Important 2026 Dubrovnik traffic update

From March 1 to November 30 2026, Dubrovnik has restricted vehicle access around the historic core and buffer zone. If you’re driving check whether your accommodation can arrange access into the restricted area, and avoid driving in without permission, even if just for drop off.

There is also a prepaid parking reservation system for the Pile and Cable Car parking areas.

Getting around Dubrovnik

Getting around Dubrovnik is easy if you choose the right base. The Old Town is pedestrian-only, and most of the main sights are within walking distance if you stay in Old Town, Pile, or Ploče.

If you’re staying further out in Lapad, Babin Kuk, Gruž, Boninovo, or Montovjerna, you can use local buses, taxis, or Uber to reach the city walls. Lapad and Babin Kuk are better for beaches and longer stays, while Gruž is more practical for ferries, buses, and budget accommodation.

For a different view of the city, consider a boat trip, kayak tour, or ferry ride so you can see Dubrovnik from the water.

Dubrovnik Croatia 2

Best time to visit Dubrovnik, Croatia

The best time to visit Dubrovnik is in April and October, when the weather is warm but the tourist crowds are thinner and you can score some good deals.

The high season in Dubrovnik runs from May to September and this is when things really heat up—literally! If visiting in the summer months be ready for crowds, higher prices, and the scorching sun.

I most recently visited in spring, and even then Dubrovnik was busier than I expected. It’s still one of my favorite cities in Croatia, especially off-season, but overtourism is real here. If you’re visiting between June and September, book your Dubrovnik hotels and apartments well in advance!

July and August are the busiest, hottest, and most expensive months. Winter is quieter and cheaper, but less ideal if beaches, boat trips, or island-hopping are a big part of your Dubrovnik plans.

The winter in Dubrovnik is mild and pleasant. While you won’t be able to enjoy the beach as much, you’ll be able to score some good deals. The city is still lively, but without the insane crowds it sees in high season.

Planning Your Dubrovnik Trip?

Dubrovnik is easy to underestimate. The Old Town looks compact, but once you add the City Walls, Fort Lovrijenac, beaches, viewpoints, boat trips, crowds, stairs, and summer heat, your timing starts to matter a lot.

These two guides will help you plan your time properly.
