During my brief stint in Auckland, I quickly learned that Auckland’s true beauty lies in its outskirts and surrounding area. The hustle and bustle, cultural offerings, top-notch food scene and vibrant waterfront were all great, but I couldn’t resist the urge to escape the urban jungle whenever possible.

Beyond Auckland city, you’ll find a mix of lush rainforests, mystical black sand beaches, volcanic landscapes and so much more!

Below I list the absolute best day trips from Auckland, ranging from destinations just a short skip and a hop from downtown to some that require a bit more of a drive (which you might choose to turn into a weekend getaway).

Best way to go on day trips from Auckland

Many of the day trip destinations mentioned below are accessible whether you opt for the flexibility of a rental car, the convenience of organized tours, or the budget-friendly choice of public transportation.

Own transport

Having your own wheels grants you the liberty to explore as your heart desires. However, driving in New Zealand may not suit everyone, especially if you’re not accustomed to left-side driving on narrow, winding roads.

Public transport

Auckland’s public transport network of ferries, busses, and trains is an eco-friendly and cost-effective option for exploring nearby attractions. However, this is the least flexible option and can be a bit of a hassle for some of the trips mentioned below.

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island, just off the coast of Auckland, is known for its stunning beaches and fantastic wineries. It is a popular escape from the busy city among locals and tourists alike.

In the morning, check out of your accommodation and make your way to the wharf to take the Passenger Ferry to Waiheke Island. The ferry goes every half an hour, takes about 45 minutes to get there. Buy your ferry ticket here.

You can start the day at the beach – either Oneroa Beach, which is a nicely sheltered beach but tends to get quite busy, or Onetangi Beach, the island’s largest beach that is great for swimming and has lots of cafés and restaurants around.

When you’ve soaked up enough sunshine, let’s taste some of that wine that Waiheke Island is so famous for! Book your hop-on, hop-off bus ticket to explore the wineries on your own or join this wine tasting tour if you’d like some company.

There are countless wineries to choose from, but Tantalus Estate also offer delicious craft beer on top of the wine. Alternatively, take a look at Obsidian. We love them for their down-to-earth simplicity and incredible wine.

In the evening everyone heads to Charlie Farley’s for a drink. Located right next to Onetangi Beach this is arguably the island’s most popular pub. We’re sure you’ll understand why once you’re sitting on their deck with a drink and watching the sunset.

Hobbiton

Hobbiton is the film set where they filmed the scenes that took place in the village of Hobbiton and parts of the Shire. The Hobbiton film set is the only film set from the movies that hasn’t been broken down after filming, instead, it has been turned into an open-air museum.

Live out your Middle-earth fantasies as you explore the lush, rolling hills of the Shire, home to the iconic hobbit holes, lush gardens, and the Green Dragon Inn. Take a guided tour through the Hobbiton village and enter the Hobbit Hole of Bag End.

Hobbiton is located near the village of Matamata, about two hours from Auckland. You can drive there on your own accord or join this organized tour from Auckland. There are also options to combine the Hobbiton visit with Rotorua, Waitomo, or both.

Rotorua is known for three things: the smell of sulfur (and accompanying geothermal landscapes), Maori culture, and as the Adventure Capital of the North Island. It is the perfect mix of nature, culture, adventure, cuisine, and otherworldly landscapes.

I love Rotorua so much that I’d suggest you pack up and head to Rotorua for a few days and follow this itinerary. It would be a perfect weekend getaway!

Waitomo Caves

There are over 300 known caves in the Waitomo area. These caves are famous because of glowworms, illuminating the dark passages like a starry night.

Cathedral Cove

Pristine golden beaches, secluded bays, misty rainforests, beautiful waterfalls and cliffside views make the Coromandel Peninsula an ideal destination for a memorable day trip. And the iconic Cathedral Cove is its crown jewel.

Cathedral Cove Beach is a true gem of New Zealand’s North Island. With its stunning natural archway and golden sands, this coastal paradise has graced many a postcard.

Waitakere Ranges and Piha Beach

The Waitakere Ranges, sprawling over 16,000 hectares of protected land, are a spectacular natural playground just a short drive west of Auckland. This lush rainforest is filled with waterfalls and hiking trails, over 250 kilometers of hiking trails to be precise.

Muriwai Beach is where endless black sands meets epic surf and scenic cliffs. There is also a safe swimming area with lifeguards and you can take surf lessons here.

But the real headliner here is the gannet colony that calls Muriwai home. These feathered divas put on quite a show, and trust me, their homes with million-dollar ocean views are worth a squawk or two. And if you visit from August to April you might even spot adorable baby Gannets.
