Where to Stay Near Plitvice Lakes: Best Hotels + Areas

Choosing where to stay near Plitvice Lakes is mostly about logistics, not nightlife, beaches or cute neighbourhoods. This is a rural national park area, and the best accommodation depends on whether you have a car, want to walk to the entrance, or simply need somewhere practical for one night before visiting the lakes early.

I stayed nearby the night before which made a huge difference. Plitvice Lakes National Park is stunning, but it is also remote, busy and much easier to enjoy if you can enter early instead of arriving after a long drive through half of Croatia acompanied by several tour buses.

For most visitors, one night near Plitvice Lakes is enough. Arrive in the afternoon or evening, stay close to the park, enter early the next morning, then continue toward Zagreb, Zadar, Split or the coast.

The best place to stay near Plitvice Lakes depends on your transport. If you do not have a car, stay close to the park entrance, bus stop or at a property with transfer options. If you do have a car, you can stay in nearby villages for better value, in Rastoke for a prettier base, or even across the border in Bosnia as a last-minute fallback.

This guide breaks down the best places to stay near Plitvice Lakes, including official park hotels, walking-distance guesthouses, nearby villages for drivers, Rastoke and Slunj, and Bosnia as a budget or last-minute fallback. I’ll also include the best hotels in Plitvice Lakes, guesthouses and apartments I’d actually consider booking.

Where to Stay Near Plitvice Lakes at a Glance

For most first-time visitors, the best place to stay near Plitvice Lakes is as close to the park as your budget allows. This is especially true if you are visiting in summer, travelling without a car, or want to enter the park early.

If you have a car, you can stay a little farther away and often get better value. If you do not have a car, be much more careful. Distances around Plitvice look small on a map, but dragging luggage along rural roads or trying to coordinate buses after a long travel day is not fun.

My honest take: Plitvice Lakes is stunning, but it is also more remote and more logistically annoying than many people expect. If you are trying to visit from the coast and return the same day, it can turn into a very long, tiring day. This is why I think staying nearby the night before is the best way to do Plitvice properly.

How I’d Choose Where to Stay Near Plitvice

If convenience matters most, I’d stay as close to the park as possible, ideally at Hotel Jezero or one of the walking-distance guesthouses. If value matters more, I’d look at the nearby villages with parking. If I wanted the overnight stop to actually feel pretty, I’d choose Rastoke or Slunj and drive to Plitvice in the morning.

The only option I would treat as a true fallback is Bosnia. It can work if you are driving, booking late, or combining Plitvice with Una National Park, but I would not cross the border just to save a few euros unless the Croatian side is sold out or wildly overpriced.

Official Park Hotels: Best for the Easiest Access

Best for: no-car visitors, early starts, one-night stays, easiest access, parking included
Avoid if: you want charm, boutique design, great value or a village atmosphere
Best stay type: official park hotel
Booking tip: check current park-hotel benefits, parking and ticket rules before booking

There used to be several official Plitvice Lakes hotels, but at the moment Hotel Jezero is the only official park hotel operating and the one I’d recommend booking. Hotel Plitvice is undergoing renovation and Hotel Bellevue is currently closed.

Hotel Jezero is the most convenient choice if your priority is getting into Plitvice Lakes early, avoiding extra morning logistics, and staying as close as possible to Entrance 2 and Lake Kozjak. It is not the most charming or best-value accommodation near Plitvice, but for pure location, it wins.

Stay here if you want the easiest possible Plitvice visit. Skip it if you get better value, a more atmospheric stay or nicer surroundings in one of the nearby villages.

hotel jezero plitvice

Hotel Jezero

The main official park hotel, best if you want the easiest access to Plitvice Lakes, Entrance 2 and Lake Kozjak.

Good to know: If you see Hotel Plitvice or Hotel Bellevue mentioned in older guides, double-check before planning around them. Both are official park hotels historically, but they are not the main bookable option right now. And if you see they’re up for grabs again, please comment below so I can update this guide.

Walking Distance Accommodation Near Plitvice Entrances

Best for: early entry, walking-distance stays, couples, photographers, one-night stays
Avoid if: you want restaurants, nightlife, lots of facilities or guaranteed transfers
Best stay type: B&Bs, guesthouses, apartments, small family-run stays
Booking tip: check the exact walking route, not just the distance “as the crow flies”

This is probably the sweet spot for many travellers looking for accommodation in Plitvice National Park. Instead of staying in a standard official hotel, you can book a guesthouse, B&B or apartment near one of the entrances and still keep your morning logistics fairly easy.

I’m talking about accommodation in Plitvica Selo, Rastovača, Mukinje and Jezerce here. They sit around different sides of the park, but from a practical visitor perspective, they serve a similar purpose: staying close enough to be able to walk to one of the entrances.

Do not get too obsessive about Entrance 1 versus Entrance 2 (or even Entrance 3) when choosing accommodation. Once you are inside the park with a valid ticket, the official routes use a combination of walking paths, boats and panoramic vehicles to connect the main lake areas.

What matters more is whether your accommodation is genuinely practical for your arrival, luggage and morning entrance time. This matters even more if you are travelling without a car.

Stay here if you want a more atmospheric stay close to the lakes. Skip it if you want full hotel facilities, lots of restaurant choice, or the easiest possible no-car setup.

Villa Sumrak Plitvica

Nearby Villages: Best With a Car

Known for: better value, parking, guesthouses, small hotels, countryside stays
Best for: road trips, families, travellers with cars, better-value accommodation
Avoid if: you do not have a car or confirmed transfer
Best stay type: hotels, guesthouses, apartments, countryside B&Bs
Booking tip: check driving time to your chosen entrance, not just distance to “Plitvice”

SEE DEALS

If you have a car, staying in one of the nearby villages around Plitvice Lakes can be a much better-value choice than staying right by the park. Look around Grabovac, Rakovica, Smoljanac, Korenica and the smaller villages scattered around the main roads.

This is where you will usually find more Plitvice Lakes accommodation options in terms of family-run guesthouses, apartments, countryside B&Bs and small hotels with parking. The trade-off is that you are not within walking distance to the entrance. You need to drive, find and pay for parking.

I would choose this area if I had a rental car and wanted better value, more space or a slightly calmer rural stay. I would not choose it without a car unless the property explicitly confirms transfers to the park or bus station.

This is probably the most practical option for many road-trippers. You can arrive in the evening, park easily, sleep somewhere quieter, then drive to the entrance early the next morning.

Best for: road trips from Zagreb, couples, scenic overnight stops, slower stays
Avoid if: you want the closest possible park access or are travelling without a car
Best stay type: guesthouses, riverside apartments, small hotels
Booking tip: stay here for atmosphere, not because it is the closest base

SEE DEALS

Rastoke and Slunj are not the closest places to stay near Plitvice Lakes, but they are much prettier and more interesting outside park hours. Rastoke is a small riverside village with waterfalls, cascades, wooden houses and old mills, and it makes the inland Croatia detour feel much more rewarding.

Rastoke is the place I’d choose if I wanted the Plitvice stop to feel more memorable. It is not as convenient as staying right beside the entrances, but the village itself is beautiful, with waterfalls, riverside houses and a fairytale feel. It makes more sense if you have a car and want a nicer evening before or after visiting the lakes.

The trade-off is distance. You still need to drive about 30. minutes to Plitvice in the morning, so this is not the best choice if your main goal is rolling out of bed and entering the park immediately.

Stay here if you want the prettiest base near Plitvice and have a car. Skip it if you are travelling without your own transport or want the shortest possible morning logistics.

Bosnia Border Area: Last-Minute or Budget Fallback

Known for: cheaper stays, more last-minute availability, Bosnia road-trip access
Best for: drivers, last-minute bookings, budget fallback, travellers also visiting Una National Park
Avoid if: you do not have a car, hate border crossings, or want the easiest Plitvice morning
Best stay type: hotels, apartments, guesthouses around the Bosnia border and Bihać area
Booking tip: check border crossing times, parking and passport requirements before booking

SEE DEALS

Staying in Bosnia is not my first recommendation for visiting Plitvice Lakes, but it is worth mentioning because it can be a useful fallback. Accommodation around Plitvice can get expensive or sell out, especially if you are booking last minute in summer.

You do not necessarily need to stay in Bihać itself. There are villages and guesthouses between the Croatian border and Bihać that can work if you have a car. Bihać simply gives you more of a town base, with more restaurants and services.

The catch is obvious: you are in another country. You will need to cross the border, drive roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on where you stay, and leave extra time in case the border is slow (but mornings are usually fine here). I would only do this with a car and only if the savings or availability make it worthwhile.

I would not stay in Bosnia just to save a tiny amount of money if there is a good option near Plitvice. But if everything close to the park is booked, overpriced or terrible, the Bosnia border area can be a reasonable backup, and Bihać is a great addition and lovely town to visit.

This option makes the most sense if you are also interested in Bosnia, Una National Park or a wider Croatia-Bosnia road trip. It makes the least sense if you simply want the easiest possible Plitvice visit.

Hotel Kostelski Buk

Hotel Kostelski Buk

A scenic river hotel near Bihać, best if Bosnia is part of the trip and not just a cheap Plitvice fallback.

Little Paradise

Little Paradise

Apartman Lida

Apartman Lida

A basic practical apartment in Izačić, best if you want to stay just across the Bosnia border and drive to Plitvice early.

Apartman EM Bajkeraj

Apartman EM-Bajkeraj

A compact Bihać apartment with parking, best for a simple overnight before driving to Plitvice.

Where to Stay Near Plitvice Lakes Without a Car

If you are visiting Plitvice Lakes without a car, location matters more than almost anything else. I would not book a beautiful countryside guesthouse unless I had confirmed exactly how I was getting to the entrance, the bus station and my next destination.

The easiest no-car option is to stay at an official park hotel or very close to the entrance/bus route. The second-best option is a guesthouse that clearly offers pickup or drop-off for the park or bus station.

  • Best no-car area: Hotel Jezero or accommodation close to Ean entrance / bus access.
  • Good if confirmed: guesthouses in Jezerce, Mukinje or nearby villages that offer transfers.
  • Risky without a car: Grabovac, Rakovica, Smoljanac, Korenica, Rastoke or Bosnia unless the property confirms transport.

Before booking, message the property and confirm if they can pick you up from the bus station and drop you at the Plitvice entrance early in the morning.

No car? Check Hotel Jezero, Mukinje accommodation, Jezerce accommodation or Guest House Lipov Hlad.

Where to Stay Near Plitvice Lakes With a Car

If you have a car, you have much more flexibility with hotels near Plitvice Lakes National Park. You can stay in nearby villages for better value, in Rastoke for atmosphere, or even across the border in Bosnia if you are booking late and everything close to the park is overpriced.

This is the setup I would prefer for Plitvice. A car lets you arrive the night before, stay somewhere more affordable or atmospheric, enter the park early, visit viewpoints, stop in Rastoke and continue your Croatia itinerary without relying on buses or transfers.

Just make sure your accommodation has parking and check the actual drive to the entrance you plan to use. Do not simply book the cheapest place with “Plitvice” in the name and assume it is five minutes from the lakes.

What to Know Before Booking Plitvice Lakes Accommodation

Before booking accommodation near Plitvice Lakes, think about your entrance time, whether you have a car, and where you are going next. This is not like booking accommodation in Split or Dubrovnik, where you are choosing between lively neighbourhoods, beaches and old town access. Around Plitvice, the main question is: will this make my park visit easier or harder?

Before booking, check:

  • How far is the accommodation from Entrance 1 or Entrance 2?
  • Is it actually walkable, or just close on a map?
  • Is there parking, and is it free?
  • If you do not have a car, does the property offer pickup or drop-off?
  • Can you reach the entrance early enough for your ticket time?
  • Are restaurants nearby, or do you need to eat before arriving?
  • Are you continuing to Zagreb, Zadar, Split, Bosnia or the coast after your visit?

I would also book early if you are visiting in summer. The best accommodation near Plitvice Lakes is limited, and the convenient places sell out or get expensive quickly. Last-minute options exist, but they are often farther away, overpriced or require a car.

Is One Night Enough Near Plitvice Lakes?

For most travellers, one night near Plitvice Lakes is enough. Arrive the night before, visit the park early the next morning, then continue your route.

I would stay two nights only if you want a slower nature stay, photography time, Rastoke, kayaking, cycling, Željava Airbase, a Bosnia/Una detour or a break from moving every day. Otherwise, I would not turn Plitvice into a long base.

Should You Stay Near Entrance 1 or Entrance 2?

For most visitors, either entrance area can work. Entrance 1 is better if you want to start with the Lower Lakes and Big Waterfall. Entrance 2 is useful for routes starting closer to the Upper Lakes and Lake Kozjak connection.

But for accommodation, I would not get too hung up on it as it’s just a short drive between the entrances. The bigger question is whether the stay is genuinely practical for your transport, luggage and entrance time. If you don’t have a car, staying withing walking distance is best.
