Through the crowds of the Advent time, I drag my suitcase, while trying to avoid the occasional icy patch. During these magical times, I know this city is going to test both my sense of adventure and my balance. But it’s worth every slippery step.

Once you’ve fortified yourself with sugar and coffee, it’s time to explore the streets. I highly recommend starting in the Upper town (Gornji Grad). Passing by the cobblestone streets with historical buildings in view will create a perfect postcard vibe and photos. 

St. Mark’s Church is a must-see, not only for its colorful roof tiles but also for the inevitable selfie struggle. Trust me, you’ll spend 10 minutes trying to angle yourself perfectly, while locals avoid it. 

Continuing in the Lower Town (Donji Grad), a slightly different feel gives the sense of the real Zagreb. Years ago, I wandered into a tiny alleyway that led me to the cute park and now it’s famous for the Grič tunnel starting here. That’s why- don’t be afraid of getting lost, Zagreb is full of gems. 

Explore Zagreb Flea Markets

There are plenty of flea markets, which vary from year to year. Ten years ago, I adored the Advent event happening in the Student Center, gathering creative artists and musicians. I could easily meet plenty of people I know, with drumming concerts and similar events to spark the togetherness. 

Nowadays, I head to HDLU or Tvornica Kulture. 

Sundays at Hrelić flea market are legendary. You’ll find everything from vintage clothes to Soviet-era memorabilia. It’s chaotic, colourful and completely authentic. Bargain with locals, sip coffee from a paper cup and enjoy this offbeat side of winter in Zagreb.

Ice skating at King Tomislav Square

Ice skating in King Tomislav Square near the train station is a charming experience to fuel the Christmas adventure. You’ll find yourself surrounded by fairy lights, festive music and people pretending they know how to skate. 

Whether you glide gracefully or wobble like a newborn deer, it’s pure fun. And when you’re done, reward yourself with a cup of mulled wine- it’s tradition. 

Skiing and hiking on Medvednica

Skiing and hiking on Medvednica/Sljeme is perfect for a day trip if you want fresh air and snow-covered landscapes. With hammocks spread on Sljeme you will feel like in the summer time, but surrounded with snow.

Head to Medvednica mountain and enjoy the panoramic views and skiing. The wind up there has no mercy, but the views are totally worth it. 

Fun fact: I once joined the hiking tour on Medvednica and ended up exploring the cave, that I still dream about something similar. Guided tours often lead to unexpected adventures if you’re open to them.

Zagreb’s street art scene doesn’t hibernate in winter. Bundle up and take a self-guided tour through Branimirova street to find the colourful murals. It’s like an outdoor gallery, just with colder fingers. 

Mala Martićeva or the south part of the Square Grga Martić got the colourful carpet, which attracts many photo enthusiasts. In Art Park Zagreb, close to Park Ribnjak, you’ll find colourful murals while chilling outside.

With plenty of crafts and homemade stuff, it’s difficult to resist. There’s food for every taste and something sugary will surely ruin your diet. 

Visiting Christmas markets unveils the spectacle of lights, music and crowds. It will make you question humanity’s relationship with gluhwein. 

You will want to try everything, from traditional sausages and chimney cakes to vegan delicacies. I personally went straight to the hot chocolate because sweetness with a warm cup is a double win. 

Then, there’s ice skating. Now, I don’t know about you, but my coordination is equal to the penguins on ice. 

If you’re aiming for an Instagram-worthy photo, avoid falling on your face. 

Christmas Markets Galore

Zagreb takes Christmas markets seriously, and you can expect a magical spirit and decorations all around the town. Strolling around the parks and Zagreb streets will let you enter the vintage vibes with a feeling just like at home. Advent time in Zagreb usually starts at the end of November and lasts till 07.01.

Besides the markets, visiting the Grič Tunnel unveils a special vibe, taking you into the Christmas novels. 

With several notable markets in the Zagreb center, let’s continue the story.

Ban Jelačić Square is the main hub, filled with enlightened trees, souvenirs and food stalls. It’s perfect for people watching and mulled wine. 

Zrinjevac Park is my personal favourite and feels like stepping into a winter wonderland. With white houses that bring a feeling of Christmas simplicity, you will stop the time relaxing by the small stage. Santa houses will make you feel slightly guilty for being an adult enjoying it. 

Following the path from Zrinjevac to the train station, you can enjoy the festive atmosphere with lovely decorations. The ice skating fun awaits you at the King Tomislav Square with more magic to absorb.

European Square Market brings quieter and more artsy vibes with local music and handmade gifts.

Upper Town Market is a charming place with the prettiest decorations, from window views to the large moon and festive swings. It’s ideal to take unique photos and avoid the biggest crowds, while enjoying the music. 

Go on a day trip from Zagreb

Now, here’s where the winter adventure truly begins: the surrounding nature. Just a short ride away is Sljeme, the peak of Medvednica mountain. You can choose your level of ambition from hiking to Medvedgrad castle and other trails. 

Medvednica has trails for all, whether you’re a hardcore hiker or someone passing by. Be ready to encounter locals who look like they were born for hiking or skiing like the famous Janica Kostelić. 

Samobor is a lovely town that I already mentioned while speaking about Carnival. It’s worth the trip just to try kremšnita cake and enjoy its flaky perfection. In winter, Samobor looks like it came out of a snow globe, with colourful facades, small bridges and cozy cafes. Hiking on Japetić will let you enjoy the soft hills and and delicious strudle at the top. 

Visiting Plitvice National Park is a highlight of your Croatian journey and you’ll be lucky to see it in the snowy edition. With fewer crowds and icy waterfalls, it’s the pure winter magic. 

Varaždin is about 1,5h away, shining in all its baroque glory. Walk its old streets, visit the castle and enjoy the slower pace. 

Trakošćan castle lies within 1h from Zagreb. There’s no direct bus, so you need to join a tour or rent a car. Strolling around the lake unveils the fairy vibes, just like the trail that follows.

Don’t miss the hike on Ravna Gora and its picturesque hills around the castle. Feeling so leisurely, you will surely wonder if it belongs to the castle. 

Winter Holidays and Events

Apart from Advent, Zagreb hosts several events in winter, let’s mention some. 

Winter Jazz Festival is dedicated to music lovers who want to cozy up a cultural vibe. It’s happening in January in the Lisinski Hall, except the autumn editions. 

Choco & Coffee Festival– once only a Choco festival, it merges with Valentine’s Day in February. Located in Family Mall, you’ll have an occasion to admire the chocolate artisans and try some new flavours. If you make your own, it will be a festival to remember so particularly. 

Museum night at the end of January will give you a chance to visit all the city museums for free and have some fun.

Christmas (Božić) in Zagreb

Zagreb at Christmas feels like someone sprinkled fairy dust over the entire city. Lights, markets, music and that unmistakable scent of cinnamon and roasted almonds- it’s everywhere. 

Locals spend Christmas Eve with family, then head to Midnight Mass in the Cathedral. On Christmas Day, everything slows down and you realize: this city knows how to do cozy.

New Year’s Eve (Nova Godina)

If you like to ring in the New Year surrounded by music, laughter and strangers hugging you at midnight, Zagreb got you. The main celebration happens in Ban Jelačić Square with concerts, fireworks and an energy so high you won’t feel cold. After midnight, trams are full of people singing- and yes, you’re invited to join. 

Carnival and local fun

Yes, winter also means Carnival season in Croatia and very popular is the one in Samobor. Being very close to Zagreb, grab a visit to this lovely town and try its cream cake. Even if you don’t participate, it’s a playful glimpse into Croatian culture. You might find yourself cheering in the cold for people dressed like giant fruits or historical figures. 

Epiphany (Sveta Tri Kralja)

January 6th marks the šeaceful end of the festive season. Locals take down decorations and enjoy one last family meal together. It often involves leftovers, cakes and mulled wine. Epiphany is such a perfect day to stroll through a quiet city, breath in crisp winter air and reflect on your resolutions. At least, you can pretend to do so. 

Valentine’s Day

By mid-February, Zagreb shakes off the holiday hangover and gets romantic again. Cafes serve heart shaped desserts and couples wander hand in hand under blankets of scarves. Zrinjevac Park glows with lights and it’s your opportunity to sweeten yourself and visit Choco and Caffe Fest. 

Whether you’re in love, heartbroken or just in love with štrukli, Valentine’s Day here feels charmingly sincere. 

Temperature, Snow, and Weather Tips

Expect winter temperatures to hover between -2°C and 5°C on average. Snow is possible mostly in December and January, but it is not so common. Zagreb looks magical in all forms. 

Regarding packing, bring layers, waterproof boots, gloves and a hat that actually covers your ears. Also, the scarf is unmissable and preferably one that doubles as a blanket. Hot drinks are your best friend in any weather during winter.

Getting to Zagreb

Zagreb is very accessible from the major European cities. 

By plane: Zagreb Airport is 20-30 minutes from the city center by car, shuttle or the publis bus. 

By train: perhaps an even more affordable option, the connections to the surrounding cities give a relaxing trip. 

By bus: offers a comfortable journey and more frequent schedules to catch, mostly with Flixbus. 

Public transport in the city works well, but trams get crowded during peak market hours. The tram ticket is very cheap though, only 0,50 cents. 

How many days in Zagreb in Winter

Realistically, 3-4 days gives you enough time to explore the city, enjoy markets, try the cafe and more. Taking even a day trip should fit into this short schedule. If you’re a slow traveller or obsessed with desserts, add an extra day.
