Where to stay in Hvar: best areas, and Hvar accommodation I’d actually book in 2026

I spent a full month on Hvar a few years ago and have been back since, and would return in a heartbeat. But choosing where to stay in Hvar can make a huge difference to your trip.

Hvar may be one island, but staying in Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa, Milna, or one of the quieter bays gives you a completely different experience.

I explored Hvar beyond the obvious and climbed to the hilltop viewpoints, swam at beaches you only find after a dusty ride, explored the quieter towns, and found little coves most visitors never reach. Here’s what I think.

For most first-time visitors, Hvar Town is the best place to stay on Hvar Island because it is the easiest base for restaurants, boat trips, ferries, beaches, and sightseeing. But it is not automatically the best choice for everyone.

Stari Grad is better if you want a calmer, more local-feeling base, Milna works well for beach-focused stays close to Hvar Town, and Jelsa or Vrboska can be better if you want a quieter and usually more affordable stay.

This is how I’d choose where to stay on Hvar depending on whether you want buzz, beaches, quiet, family space, value, or easy ferry access. I’ll break down the best areas to stay in Hvar, who each area is best for, what to watch out for before booking, and the hotels and apartments I’d actually consider.

 

Where to Stay in Hvar: Best Areas and Towns

I have a very soft spot for Hvar. That slow month-long stay changed how I think about where to stay in Hvar, because the island is so much more than the famous harbor and the pretty old town photos.

But Hvar is also a very large island with mostly poor road connections. The majority of towns and attractions are located on the wider Western part of the island while the narrow eastern point is very sparsely populated with limited facilities and roads.

Best Areas to Stay in Hvar at a Glance

Here’s a quick breakdown of the best areas and towns to stay in Hvar:

• Hvar Town: the best overall base for first-time visitors, short stays, ferries, restaurants, boat trips, and easy sightseeing.
• Stari Grad: the best place to stay in Hvar for a quieter, more local feel, historic charm, and a calmer base with better island access by car.
• Jelsa: a relaxed harbor town with better value accommodation, family-friendly vibes, and easy access to beaches and villages.
• Vrboska: a small, picturesque village with a marina, stone bridges, and a slower pace. Best if you want quiet over convenience.

Are There Any Areas to Avoid in Hvar?

Hvar is generally a safe island, so this is less about avoiding “bad” areas and more about avoiding the wrong base for your trip.

I would be careful booking accommodation that is far from the town or beach you actually want to visit. Hvar is longer and hillier than many people expect, and public transport is limited compared with mainland Croatia. A place that looks close on a map can still be annoying without a car, especially in summer heat.

The best accommodation on Hvar

Below, I’ve broken down the best accommodation in Hvar by area, starting with where I personally stayed, then moving through Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska, Milna, Sveta Nedilja, and a few more unique stays around the island.

I’ve included a mix of hotels, apartments, guesthouses, villas, and more secluded stays because the best place to stay in Hvar really depends on your trip. A hotel in Hvar Town makes sense if you want the easiest base. An apartment is usually better if you want more space, parking, or better value. A quieter village or hidden bay can be magical, but only if you’re happy trading convenience for peace.

Where I stayed in Hvar:

For my month in Hvar, I wanted something comfortable, practical, and reasonably priced in Hvar Town. I wasn’t looking for a luxury hotel. I wanted parking, a kitchen, and an easy enough walk into the Old Town and to Pokojni Dol beach.

I stayed at Apartments and Rooms Ivanović and honestly had a brilliant experience. This was not sponsored. I paid for the stay myself, stayed for a full month, and would happily stay there again if I wanted an apartment-style base near Hvar Town.

The host, Ivanka, was lovely too. She was easy to talk to, happy to share tips, and genuinely helpful throughout my stay.

Hvar Town: Best for First-Timers, Restaurants and Boat Trips

Known for: Hvar harbor, St. Stephen’s Square, Spanish Fortress, Pakleni Islands boat trips, restaurants, beach bars

Hvar Town is the best place to stay in Hvar for most first-time visitors. It’s the island’s main hub, the prettiest and most convenient base, and the easiest place to stay if you want restaurants, ferries, boat trips, beaches, and sightseeing within walking distance.

I still think Hvar Town is one of the most beautiful small towns in Croatia. The harbor views are ridiculous, the walk up to the fortress is always worth it, and some of my favorite Hvar memories are from slow evenings wandering the stone streets, stopping for dinner, and watching the lights come on over the marina. Skaline od Gojave is especially pretty when the bougainvillea is blooming, and the rooftop at Adriana is still one of my favorite spots for a coffee or drink with a view.

That said, Hvar Town is not the cheapest or calmest place to stay on the island. In peak season, prices jump, the best places book out early, and parking can be annoying. If you’re staying in the old town or up the hill, expect stairs. The views are often worth it, but your suitcase may disagree.

Hvar Town’s atmosphere has also changed a bit in recent years with tightening noise rules, so it’s no longer the same “anything goes until sunrise” destination people remember from years ago. Honestly, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Hvar Town feels more balanced now: still glamorous, social, and fun. It still has great bars, beach clubs, and a lively summer feel, but is easier to enjoy if you’re here for the island itself, not just late nights.

Stay in Hvar Town if you want the easiest base on Hvar and you like having everything close by. Skip it if you want a quieter, better-value stay, easier parking, or more space.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a cheap hotel in Hvar. If you’re on a budget it’s best to book an apartment or a guest house. The added benefit? You’ll have access to a kitchen and can save even more money by making your own meals.

Stari Grad: Best for a Calmer, More Local Stay on Hvar

Known for: historic old town, Stari Grad Plain, Hekterovic House, too many churches
Best for: couples, families, longer stays, quieter trips, road trips, local atmosphere
Avoid if: you want the easiest base for Pakleni Islands boat trips or Hvar Town nightlife
Best stay type: boutique hotels, seaside resorts, apartments, family-friendly resorts
Booking tip: check whether you are staying in the old town, by the ferry port, or outside Stari Grad

Stari Grad is one of the best places to stay in Hvar if you want a calmer, more local-feeling base than Hvar Town. It is still beautiful, historic, and atmospheric, but it has a much slower rhythm. Think old stone streets, waterfront restaurants, boats in the harbor, and easy access to the rest of the island by rental car.

I would choose Stari Grad accommodation if you want to experience Hvar without being right in the busiest part of the island. It is especially good for couples, families, road trips, and longer stays where you want more space, easier parking, and a more relaxed evening scene.

Stari Grad is also a strong base if you plan to explore beyond Hvar Town. From here, it is easier to drive toward Jelsa, Vrboska, inland villages, beaches, wineries, and the UNESCO-listed Stari Grad Plain. You can still visit Hvar Town for the fortress, restaurants, boat tours, and Pakleni Islands, but you are not sleeping in the middle of the main tourist hub.

The main trade-off is convenience. If this is your first trip to Hvar and you only have one or two nights, Hvar Town is still easier. Skip it if you want easy boat tours, beach clubs, and the main sights right outside your door.

But if you have a car, a longer stay, or you prefer quieter evenings, Stari Grad might actually be the better choice.

Vrboska: Best for Quiet, Affordable Stays

Known for: small harbor, stone bridges, marina, quiet village atmosphere, nearby beaches
Best for: affordable stays, slow trips, families, couples, travelers with a car
Avoid if: you want lots of restaurants, nightlife, ferries, boat tours, or easy Hvar Town access
Best stay type: apartments, villas, guesthouses, small resorts outside the village
Booking tip: only stay here if you are happy renting a car or scooter

Vrboska is a small, pretty harbor village on the north side of Hvar Island. It is much quieter and usually more affordable than Hvar Town or Stari Grad. It has cute stone houses, many little bridges, a small secluded marina, and even a tiny island.

I would only book accommodation in Vrboska if you have a car or scooter and you are deliberately looking for a quieter base. There is not loads happening here, and it is not convenient for quick Hvar Town dinners, ferries, or Pakleni Islands boat trips.

That said, Vrboska can work well if you want better value, more space, and a calmer village stay. It is also handy for exploring Jelsa, Stari Grad, nearby beaches, and the less obvious parts of Hvar. I would not choose it for a short first trip.

Jelsa: Better Value, Quieter Evenings and a More Local Base

Jelsa is a relaxed harbor town on the north side of Hvar Island, and it is one of the better options if you want more affordable accommodation in Hvar. It has a pretty waterfront, restaurants, cafes, beaches nearby, and a much calmer feel than Hvar Town.

I would consider Jelsa if you want a slower, more local-feeling stay and you are not planning to be in Hvar Town every evening. It works especially well for families, couples, and longer stays where value, space, and easy beach days matter more than being close to the main tourist hub.

The catch is location. Jelsa is not where I’d stay for a short first trip to Hvar unless I had a car or scooter. It is useful for exploring Stari Grad, Vrboska, inland villages, wineries, and beaches around this side of the island, but it is not the most convenient base for Pakleni Islands tours, ferries, or Hvar Town restaurants.

Stay here if you want better value, a quieter base, and a more relaxed Hvar trip. Skip it if you want the easiest base for sightseeing, boat tours, and short-stay convenience.

Best Accommodation in Jelsa

 

Sveta Nedilja: Remote, Scenic and Best With a Car

Known for: dramatic coast, vineyards, cliffs, small beaches, via ferrata,
Best for: quiet seaside stays, remote escapes, travelers with a car
Avoid if: you want easy Hvar Town access, lots of restaurants, or convenience
Best stay type: sea-view apartments, villas, guesthouses, small family-run stays
Booking tip: only stay here if you are comfortable driving and happy being far from the main towns

Sveta Nedilja and the southern coast are for a very specific kind of Hvar trip. This is not where I would stay for a short first visit, and it is definitely not the most practical base if you want restaurants, ferries, boat tours, or easy evenings in Hvar Town.

But if you want a quieter, more dramatic side of the island, this part of Hvar is gorgeous. The south coast has steep hills, vineyards, sea views, little beaches, and a much more remote feel than Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa, or Vrboska.

I would only book accommodation in Sveta Nedilja if I had a car and wanted to slow right down. It can be a beautiful base for swimming, wine, sunsets, and switching off, but you are trading convenience for scenery.

Stay here if you want a remote beach escape, sea views, wine-country atmosphere, and quiet. Skip it if you want to see a lot, eat somewhere different every night, or use Hvar Town as your main base.

Best Accommodation in Sveta Nedilja

Milna: Beachy, Quieter and Close to Hvar Town

Known for: pebble beaches, seafood restaurants, quieter seaside stays
Best for: beach-focused stays, families, quieter trips close to Hvar Town
Avoid if: you want lots of restaurants, nightlife, shopping, ferries, or everything within walking distance
Best stay type: small hotels, beach apartments, family-run guesthouses
Booking tip: Milna is close to Hvar Town, but you’ll still want a car, scooter, taxi, or bus if you plan to go in often

Milna is a small seaside village just outside Hvar Town, and it works well if you want a more beach-focused stay without being too far from the island’s main hub. It has pebble beaches, a handful of restaurants, and a much calmer feel than central Hvar Town.

I’d look at accommodation in Milna if you want beach time, easier family logistics, and a quieter base that is still close enough to reach Hvar Town for dinner, sightseeing, or boat trips. It is not as convenient as staying in town, but it is much less intense in peak season.

The trade-off is that Milna is small. There is not loads going on, and you should not expect the same choice of restaurants, hotels, tours, or transport as Hvar Town. I would stay here for a relaxed beach break, not for a packed sightseeing itinerary.

Skip it if you want everything on your doorstep or you do not want to deal with taxis, buses, or driving.

Best Accommodation in Milna

Remote Hvar Stays: Unique Accommodation & Off-the-Beaten-Path Escapes

Best for: retreats, romantic escapes, longer stays, nature lovers, travelers with a car
Avoid if: you want restaurants, nightlife, ferries, boat tours, or easy access to Hvar Town
Best stay type: villas, glamping, beach retreats, eco stays
Booking tip: check access carefully. Some places are down rough roads, and most are not realistic without your own transport.

This is the section for the more unusual places to stay on Hvar: remote villas, glamping tents, beach retreats, secluded apartments, and simple Robinson-style stays where the whole point is to get away from everything.

I wouldn’t book one of these for a short first trip to Hvar. They are too far from the main towns, and you’ll spend too much time dealing with logistics. But for a slower island escape where accommodation is part of the adventure, this is where Hvar gets really special.

These stays are best if you want quiet mornings, swim-all-day beaches, sea views, nature, and the kind of trip where time stops mattering a bit. Some properties offer pick-ups or shuttles, but for most of them I’d want my own car.

Stay in one of these places if you want a retreat. Skip them if you want to pop into Hvar Town every night, join lots of boat tours, or eat somewhere different without planning ahead.

Best Unique and Remote Accommodation on Hvar

 

What to Know Before Booking Accommodation in Hvar

Before you book accommodation in Hvar, think carefully about how you are arriving, how long you are staying, and whether you want to rent a car. Hvar is not difficult to travel around, but the island is longer, hillier, and less public-transport-friendly than many first-time visitors expect.

If you are only staying for one or two nights, I would keep things simple and book accommodation in Hvar Town. You will be close to the ferry port, restaurants, boat tours, the fortress, beaches, and the Pakleni Islands. It is the easiest base by far.

If you have more time, a car, or you want a quieter stay, Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska, Milna, and the southern coast all make more sense. These areas can be calmer, better value, and more spacious, but they are not as convenient if you want to be in Hvar Town every day.

Hvar Is on the Expensive Side

Hvar is one of the more expensive islands in Croatia, and prices in Hvar Town have gone up a lot in recent years. Accommodation, restaurants, drinks, taxis, and boat trips can all feel noticeably pricier here than in quieter parts of the island or mainland Croatia.

If you are trying to keep costs down, avoid peak summer if you can, book early, and look beyond Hvar Town. Stari Grad, Jelsa, and Vrboska usually offer better value, especially for apartments and longer stays.

Do You Need a Car in Hvar?

You do not need a car if you are staying in Hvar Town for a short trip. In fact, I would not bother with one if your plan is mostly restaurants, boat tours, Pakleni Islands, the fortress, and nearby beaches. Parking can be annoying, and most of what you need is walkable.

You should strongly consider a car if you are staying in Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska, Sveta Nedilja, the southern coast, or want to explore any of the more remote bays. You can use taxis and some buses, but relying on them for your whole stay limits you fast.

• No car: book Hvar Town accommodation.
• Car useful: Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska, or Milna.
• Car definitely needed: Sveta Nedilja, the southern coast, inland villages, or remote bay stays.

I personally loved having my own wheels on Hvar because it opened up the quieter beaches, villages, viewpoints, and hidden corners that most short-stay visitors miss. But if I were only coming for two nights and staying in Hvar Town, I’d skip the car and spend the money on a good boat tour instead.

How to Get to Hvar, Croatia

How you get to Hvar matters because ferries arrive in different parts of the island. This can make one area much more convenient than another, especially if you are arriving with luggage, traveling without a car, or booking accommodation outside Hvar Town.

Most visitors reach Hvar from Split, Dubrovnik, Korčula, Brač, or Drvenik. In summer, there are more catamarans and ferry connections, while outside peak season you need to check schedules more carefully before locking in accommodation.

Arriving by Catamaran to Hvar Town

This is the easiest option if you are staying in Hvar Town. The catamaran drops you close to the center, and from there you can walk to most hotels, apartments, restaurants, and boat tour departure points.

If you are not renting a car and want the smoothest arrival, this is the setup I’d choose. Book somewhere walkable from the harbor, but check whether your accommodation is up a steep hill or inside the old town where cars cannot easily reach.

Arriving by Ferry to Stari Grad

The car ferry from Split arrives at Stari Grad ferry port, which is outside the town itself. This is useful if you are bringing a car or staying around Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska, or the quieter parts of the island.

If you are staying in Hvar Town, arriving at Stari Grad ferry port is still doable, but you will need a bus, taxi, transfer, or rental car to get across the island. This is not a disaster, but it is one extra step people often forget to factor in.

Arriving from Drvenik to Sućuraj

The Drvenik to Sućuraj ferry is useful if you are driving along the coast or coming from the Makarska/Dubrovnik direction, but Sućuraj is on the far eastern end of Hvar. I would not choose this route just because it looks convenient on paper unless it fits your wider road trip.

Sućuraj and east Hvar can be peaceful, but they are far from Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska, the Pakleni Islands, and most places first-time visitors want to see. This is why I do not recommend far eastern Hvar as a base unless you know exactly what kind of remote trip you are planning.

Private Speedboat Transfers to Hvar

Private speedboat transfers are the fastest way to reach Hvar and can be worth it for late arrivals, groups, airport pick-ups, villa stays, or anyone who wants to avoid juggling ferry schedules after a travel day.

They are expensive, but they are also much more flexible. Depending on your accommodation, a private transfer may be able to drop you closer to where you are staying instead of leaving you to sort out a ferry, taxi, or bus connection from Hvar Town or Stari Grad port.

I would not bother with this for a simple budget trip, but for a special stay, a group trip, or a remote Hvar accommodation booking, it can save a lot of hassle.

How to Get Around Hvar

How you get around Hvar depends heavily on where you stay. If you book accommodation in Hvar Town, you can walk to the harbor, restaurants, fortress, beaches, and most boat tour departures. For a short first trip, this is by far the easiest no-car option.

If you stay in Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska, Milna, Sveta Nedilja, or a remote bay, I would want my own transport. Hvar is long, hilly, and full of narrow roads, so places that look close on a map can still take longer than expected.

• A car is the most comfortable option if you are staying outside Hvar Town, traveling with luggage, or planning to explore Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska, the southern coast, wineries, and beaches. Just check parking before booking accommodation, especially in Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa, and Vrboska. Rent a car here.
• A scooter is a fun and practical way to explore western Hvar, especially if you want beaches, viewpoints, and small villages without dealing with car parking. I would still avoid planning huge cross-island rides unless you actually enjoy long scooter days. Hire a scooter here.
• An ATV makes sense if you want to explore rougher roads, hidden viewpoints, and beaches that are awkward to reach by normal car. This is especially useful around the Kabal Peninsula and some routes toward the southern coast. Rent an ATV here.
• A boat is brilliant for the Pakleni Islands, Red Rocks, and hidden bays, but don’t assume you can rent one without a license. Controls have become stricter, so if you are not licensed, book a boat tour or use water taxis instead. If you are licensed, check boat rental options here.
• Public buses connect the main towns, including Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa, and Vrboska, but I would not rely on them for beach-hopping or remote stays. They are useful for basic point-to-point travel, not for seeing the best of the island.

Stay in Hvar Town if you want the easiest no-car trip. Stay elsewhere if you want more space, quiet, or better value, but budget for a car, scooter, ATV, taxis, or boat days. Hvar rewards exploring, but it does not reward bad transport planning.

Best time to visit Hvar island

The best time to visit Hvar is in the shoulder season (April till mid-June or in September and October) when the crowds are manageable, the weather is warm and pleasant, and the prices more affordable. If you visit in Autumn you’ll also have the benefit of the warmer sea.

Hvar claims it gets the most sunshine of all the islands and it is a popular summer holiday destination and becomes very crowded, loud and expensive in the peak of season (late June till the end of August).

As a rule of thumb we would advise you to avoid Croatia in the peak of summer. It just get too hot, too crowded and too expensive and we believe you’ll have a much better experience visiting in late spring or early Autumn.

During the winter months Hvar is very quiet and most bars, restaurants and shops are closed.
