Hvar Boat Rental: Licence Rules, Best Routes & Boat Tour Alternatives

Renting a boat in Hvar sounds like the dream: you, the Pakleni Islands, turquoise water, hidden coves, no fixed tour schedule, and a cooler box full of snacks. And hyes, a boat day around Hvar really can be one of the best days you have in Croatia.

I spent a full month on Hvar and rented a small boat to explore the Pakleni Islands. It was one of my favorite days on the island, but it is also one of those things I would not blindly recommend to everyone.

The big catch is that boat rental in Hvar is not always as simple as “show up, pay, and drive into the sunset.” In Croatia, you officially need the correct boat licence to rent and drive a boat yourself. Around Hvar, you may still see “no licence needed” boat rental signs, especially for small boats, but that does not mean it is risk-free, legal, or the best idea for most visitors.

So this guide is an honest Hvar boat rental guide covering licence rules, boat types, where to go, what to watch out for, and when a private boat tour or skippered boat trip is the smarter choice.

Should You Rent a Boat in Hvar?

Rent a boat in Hvar if you have a valid boat licence, feel confident handling a boat, understand local sea conditions, and want the freedom to explore the Pakleni Islands or Hvar’s south coast at your own pace.

If you do not have a valid licence, I would not plan your Hvar boat day around a self-drive rental. Book a boat with a skipper, a private boat tour, or a small-group boat trip instead.

Renting a small boat around Hvar can be brilliant, but only if you are licensed and comfortable. If you want the same freedom without the stress, book a private boat tour with a skipper. You still get the turquoise coves, swim stops, Pakleni Islands, and Red Rocks, but someone else handles the boat, weather, anchoring, and awkward “wait, are we allowed to do this?” moments.

For most, a skippered tour is the better choice. You can still customize the day, ask for quieter coves, avoid the worst crowds, and actually relax instead of watching the anchor like it owes you money.

Best Hvar Boat Trips to Book Instead

If you came here looking for Hvar boat rental but do not have a licence, this is the section I’d actually use.

These boat tour options give you the main benefits of a boat rental, without the legal grey area, handling stress, fuel questions, anchoring awkwardness, or insurance uncertainty.

Best private boat tour

Red Rocks, Pakleni Islands and Hvar southern beaches

This is the one I’d push hardest for someone who originally wanted to rent a boat in Hvar for flexibility. It is private, skippered, and designed around exactly the places most people want a boat for: Pakleni Islands, Red Rocks, Hvar’s south coast, hidden beaches, and swim stops.

You get more freedom than a standard group tour with a skipper who knows the coastline, conditions, and where to stop.

GROUP SAILING DAY

Half Day Sailing around Hvar and Pakleni Islands

Choose this if you want something prettier and more relaxed than a speedboat tour. It is a great fit for the Pakleni Islands, swimming, snorkeling, and just enjoying the sea without trying to cram every possible island into one day.

This is especially good if you are not fussed about maximum flexibility and mainly want a gorgeous half-day on the water.

relaxed group boat day

Pakleni Islands Boat Tour

This works well if you want a straightforward boat day with swim stops, snacks, and water. It is less private and flexible than hiring a boat with a skipper, but it is also easier, calmer, and more budget-friendly.

Full-day adventure

Book the Blue Cave & Vis Island speedboat tour here.

Book this if you want the bigger iconic Hvar boat trip. The Blue Cave itself is a short visit, so the route matters. This kind of tour is worth it for the full day: Blue Cave, Green Cave, Budikovac, Stiniva, Vis, Komiža, and often a Pakleni Islands stop depending on the route.

If you are choosing between a simple Hvar boat rental and a Blue Cave tour, decide based on pace. For a relaxed swim-and-cove day, stay closer to Hvar and the Pakleni Islands. For a big bucket-list day, do the Blue Cave and Vis route.

Hvar Boat Rental: Do You Need a Licence?

Yes, if you want to rent and drive a boat yourself in Croatia, you generally need a valid boat licence. If the boat has a VHF radio, you also need the appropriate radio/VHF certificate.

If you already have a boat licence from abroad, check whether it is recognized in Croatia before you travel. Do not assume your home-country certificate automatically works. Croatia has its own accepted licence rules, and rental companies may ask to see proof before handing over a boat.

In simple terms:

  • Bareboat rental means you rent the boat without a skipper and drive it yourself. For this, you need the correct licence.
  • Skippered boat rental means you hire the boat with a licensed skipper. This is the better option if you do not have a licence or do not feel fully confident.
  • Group boat tours are the easiest option if you do not need a fully private day and just want to visit the best swim stops, caves, or islands.

If you do not have a licence but still want a flexible boat day, you have three realistic options:

  • Hire a boat with a skipper.
  • Book a private boat tour from Hvar.
  • Join a small-group boat tour to the Pakleni Islands, Red Rocks, Blue Cave, or Vis.

I would not build your trip around “maybe I can rent a small boat without a licence.” You might be able to find someone offering it. That does not make it the smartest plan.

Important: This article is for travel-planning information only. Boat rules, licence recognition, insurance terms, and rental practices can change. Always check with the rental company, port authority, and your insurer before renting a boat in Hvar.

Renting a Boat Without a Licence in Hvar

As you walk along the riva in Hvar Town, you may see signs or posters advertising boat rental without a licence. You might also meet travelers who rented a small boat around Hvar and genuinely thought no licence was needed.

This is where things get messy.

In practice, some small boats have historically been rented to tourists without anyone asking too many questions. In your old guide, this was framed as common practice around Hvar, especially for small low-horsepower boats like basic pasara-style rentals.

But common practice is not the same as “you are definitely allowed to do it.” And even if you are not checked, you still need to think about what happens if something goes wrong.

What if you get stopped or checked?

If you are driving a boat without the required licence and get checked, you could be fined and may have to return the boat. Some rental companies may downplay this risk, but the fine is not the only problem.

The bigger question is: what happens if you damage the boat, hit another boat, injure someone, anchor badly, drift into rocks, or get caught in bad conditions?

That is where I would be much more cautious. Rental companies may say insurance is included, but insurance can get complicated fast when licences, negligence, alcohol, and accidents enter the chat. And yes, that chat is ugly.

My take on no-licence boat rental in Hvar

I get the appeal. A small boat, a sunny day, the Pakleni Islands right in front of you. It feels easy. But if you do not have a valid licence, I would book one of these instead:

That way you still get the boat-day magic without turning your holiday into a legal admin adventure. Croatia is beautiful. Paperwork is not.

Bareboat Rental vs Boat With Skipper

When people talk about Hvar boat rental, they usually mean one of two things: renting a boat and driving it themselves, or hiring a boat with a skipper.

Bareboat rental in Hvar

Bareboat rental means you rent the boat without a skipper or crew. You are responsible for driving the boat, reading conditions, anchoring, avoiding restricted areas, keeping an eye on fuel, and returning the boat safely.

This is best if you:

  • Have a valid boat licence accepted in Croatia.
  • Have real boating experience, not just “I once drove a jet ski in Thailand” confidence.
  • Want to explore the Pakleni Islands or nearby Hvar bays independently.
  • Are comfortable anchoring, docking, and reacting if the wind picks up.

If that sounds like you, bareboat rental can be fantastic. If not, skip it.

Boat rental with skipper in Hvar

A boat with a skipper is the better option if you want freedom without responsibility. You still get a private boat, flexible itinerary, swim stops, hidden coves, and local recommendations, but you do not have to drive, dock, anchor, or worry about the licence issue.

This is the option I would choose for most travelers, especially if you want to visit Red Rocks, Hvar’s south coast, or combine the Pakleni Islands with several swim stops.

Best option: Red Rocks, Pakleni Islands and Hvar southern beaches private boat tour.

Best Places to Go by Boat from Hvar

The best boat rental routes from Hvar depend on your boat type, experience, weather, and how much time you have. If you are renting a small boat, keep it simple and stay close. If you book a skippered speedboat, you can go further and cover more ground.

Pakleni Islands

The Pakleni Islands are the easiest and most popular boat trip from Hvar Town. They sit just across from the harbor, and the boat ride usually takes around 10 to 20 minutes depending on where you are going and what kind of boat you are on.

This is where I rented a small boat, dropped anchor in beautiful bays, swam, sunbathed, snorkeled, and basically had the exact Hvar boat day everyone imagines. If you have a licence and only want one independent boat day, this is the route I’d pick.

If you do not rent a boat, book this half-day sailing tour, this relaxed boat tour, or take a water taxi to Palmižana, Mlini, or Ždrilca.

My favorite Pakleni Islands stops include:

  • Sveti Klement for Palmižana, Vinogradišće Bay, quieter coves, restaurants, and the biggest variety.
  • Marinkovac for Mlini, Ždrilca, Stipanska, Carpe Diem Beach, and a mix of swimming and beach bars.
  • Jerolim for a close, simple island stop and a long-established naturist beach.
  • Stari Stani if Palmižana feels too full and you want a quieter anchoring spot nearby.
  • Tarsce Bay for snorkeling, fish, clear water, and a more natural feel.

How to visit the Pakleni Islands from Hvar

hvar croatia velo zarace beach

Dubovica, Zaraće and nearby Hvar beaches

Dubovica and Zaraće are some of the prettiest beaches on Hvar. You can reach them by road, but arriving by boat gives you a completely different experience, especially if you combine them with swim stops along the coast.

By land, you deal with narrow roads, parking, and steep walks down to the beach. By boat, you get the sea approach, easier swimming, and more flexibility. Very annoying how boats keep winning this island.

Red Rocks and Hvar’s south coast

Red Rocks is one of the best places to visit by boat from Hvar if you want something more dramatic than the usual beach-bar stops. The cliffs are reddish, steep, and much better seen from the water than from land.

This is where a private boat tour makes much more sense than a basic small rental. The south coast has beautiful coves, but it is also more exposed, and some places are awkward to access if you do not know the area.

Best option: Red Rocks, Pakleni Islands and Hvar southern beaches private boat tour.

Blue Cave Croatia 4

Blue Cave, Vis, Green Cave and Stiniva

The Blue Cave and Vis route is one of the most famous boat trips from Hvar, but I would not treat this as a casual DIY boat rental route unless you are very experienced and have the right boat.

The Blue Cave is on Biševo Island near Vis, and the visit itself is controlled by official boats once you arrive. Most visitors are much better off booking an organized boat tour from Hvar.

Best Boat Options in Hvar

The right boat depends on where you want to go and how comfortable you are on the water. Do not book the cheapest thing you find just because it floats. Floating is the absolute minimum requirement, not the business model.

Small motorboat rental

Small motorboats are the classic Hvar rental option for exploring the Pakleni Islands and nearby bays. These are usually simple boats with low to moderate horsepower, enough room for a few people, and ideally a sunshade and ladder.

In the old article, I mentioned renting a Betina 20HP and preferring it over a very basic 5HP pasara-style boat because the extra power made the trip faster and more fun. That still stands as practical advice: if you are licensed and renting a small boat, avoid anything painfully underpowered if you want to explore beyond one nearby bay.

For a small rental boat, look for:

  • A shade cover.
  • A ladder for getting back in after swimming.
  • Enough space for your group.
  • A cooler box or storage space.
  • Clear instructions on fuel, route limits, anchoring, and return time.
  • Life jackets and required safety equipment.

Small boats are best for the Pakleni Islands, not ambitious long-distance island-hopping.

Speedboat rental or private speedboat tour

A faster speedboat is better for Red Rocks, Hvar’s south coast, Vis, Blue Cave, Green Cave, Stiniva, Brač, or longer routes. But this is also where you really need the right licence, experience, and confidence.

For most travelers, I would not rent a speedboat bareboat in Hvar. I would book it with a skipper and enjoy the day.

Best private speedboat option: Red Rocks, Pakleni Islands and Hvar southern beaches tour.

hvar croatia aerial boats

Sailing boat or yacht trip

If you want the dreamy Hvar boat-day feeling without bouncing around on a speedboat, a sailing trip can be a better fit. You will not cover as much ground, but that is kind of the point.

This half-day sailing tour around Hvar and the Pakleni Islands is the one I’d choose if you want a slower, prettier, swim-focused day rather than a packed itinerary.

Water taxi from Hvar Town

A water taxi is the easiest way to visit the Pakleni Islands without renting a boat or joining a tour. You just take a boat from Hvar Town to one of the main stops, usually Palmižana, Mlini, Ždrilca, Jerolim, or Carpe Diem Beach.

This is best if you want a beach day rather than a boat day. It is simple and cost-effective, but you do not get the same freedom to hop between coves, stop for swims, or drop anchor wherever looks good.

Kayak or SUP to the Pakleni Islands

Kayaking or paddleboarding can be a fun way to see the coast near Hvar, but I would only do this in calm conditions. The Pakleni Islands look close, and they are close, but wind and boat traffic can still make the crossing feel very different once you are out there.

If you want an active water day, book this private half-day kayak experience in Hvar and the Pakleni Islands.

Hvar Boat Rental Tips Before You Go

Whether you rent a boat yourself or book a private boat with a skipper, these are the things I would check before committing.

  • Check licence and insurance terms clearly.
Do not rely on vague “it’s fine” answers. Ask what licence is required, whether your certificate is accepted, what insurance covers, what deposit is needed, and what happens if the boat is damaged. If you book a skippered private tour, this is much easier because the skipper handles the boat and licence side.
  • Ask whether fuel is included.
Fuel can make a big difference to the final price, especially for speedboats or longer routes. Always ask if fuel is included, estimated, or charged separately based on usage.
  • Bring ice, water and snacks.
Most small rental boats may have a cooler box, but not always ice packs. Grab ice from the supermarket or freeze a water bottle the night before. Bring more water than you think you need, especially in July and August.
  • Bring water shoes and snorkel gear.
Croatia is pebbly, rocky, and sea-urchin happy. Water shoes are not glamorous, but neither is hobbling around like you lost a fight with the Adriatic. If snorkel gear is not included, bring your own. Tarsce Bay and several Pakleni coves can be great for snorkeling, especially if you keep close to the coast and avoid boat traffic.
  • Be careful where you anchor.
Do not anchor on protected seagrass, too close to swimmers, or in busy channels. If you do not know where and how to anchor safely, book a skipper. This is not the place to freestyle your way into marine damage or a boat traffic mess.
  • Start early in peak season.
In July and August, the popular bays get busy. Start early if you want better anchoring spots, calmer water, and a less chaotic experience. This is especially true around Palmižana, Mlini, Ždrilca, and the more famous Pakleni Islands stops.

Best Time to Rent a Boat in Hvar

The best time for boat trips in Hvar is late spring, early summer, and early autumn: roughly May, June, September, and early October.

This is when the weather is usually warm enough for boat days, the sea is inviting, and the island is not quite as intense as peak summer.

July and August are the busiest and most expensive months. You can absolutely rent a boat or book a boat tour then, but expect more traffic on the water, busier bays, higher prices, and more pressure to book ahead.

I would avoid planning a Hvar boat day in winter unless you know exactly what you are doing. Hvar gets very quiet outside the main season, many restaurants and beach bars close, and boat options become more limited.

If you are visiting in peak season, book private boat tours and popular Blue Cave trips early. The best operators and routes can sell out, especially for small groups and private options.

Where to Stay in Hvar for Boat Trips

If boat trips, Pakleni Islands, Blue Cave tours, and easy water taxis are high on your list, stay in or near Hvar Town.

Hvar Town is the easiest base for boat days because most tours, water taxis, private boat trips, and transfers leave from the harbor. It is also where you will find the biggest choice of restaurants, bars, hotels, and apartments.

Just remember that Hvar Town is hilly, the old town is pedestrian-only, and parking can be a pain. If you are arriving with a car, check parking before you book.

Getting to Hvar

There is no commercial airport on Hvar, so you need to arrive by boat or ferry. Most visitors come from Split, but there are also routes from Drvenik and nearby islands depending on the season.

  • Car ferry: The main car ferry route is Split to Stari Grad. There is also a Drvenik to Sućuraj ferry, which can be useful if you are coming from the Makarska Riviera or driving along the coast.
  • Passenger ferry to Hvar Town: The passenger ferry or catamaran is the easiest option if you are not bringing a car. It is faster than the car ferry and drops you right in Hvar Town, close to hotels, restaurants, water taxis, and boat tour departures.
  • Private speedboat transfer: A private speedboat transfer is the fastest and most flexible way to get to Hvar, especially for groups, late arrivals, airport connections, or travelers who want to avoid ferry schedules. Book your private speedboat transfer to Hvar here.
